Car & Driver Mid-Size Luxury SUV Comparo

The January 2003 C&D issue has a comparo on Mid-Size Luxury (?)SUVs, and these are the results:
1. Volkswagen Touareg V8
2. Lexus GX470
3. Acura MDX (missed tying for 2nd place with the Lexus GX470 by 1 point)
4. BMW X5 3.0
5. Volvo XC90 T6 (tied)
5. Lincoln Aviator (tied)
7. Land Rover Discovery
8. GMC Envoy
0 - 60 times
1. Lincoln Aviator (V8) -- 7.4
2. Volkswagen Touareg (V8) -- 7.5
3. Lexus GX470 (V8) -- 7.7
4. Acura MDX (V6) -- 7.8
5. BMW X5 3.0 (V6) -- 8.1
6. GMC Envoy (V6) -- 8.2
7. Volvo XC90 T6 (V6) -- 8.5
8. Land Rover Discovery (V8) -- 9.2

Anyone see the latest C&D issue yet?
My issue has not arrived yet and it is actually ticking me off since C&D always hits the newsstands before subscribers get their issues. Motor Trend always arrives before or at the same time that the issue hits the newsstands. C&D distribution sucks!
Edit: Modified list a bit based on info from other sources...no C&D yet.
Edit: This article is confirmed, I saw the magazine at the grocery (damn C&D, still no sign of my issue in the mailbox) but I did not read it, just browsed.
Edit: Finally got the C&D issue yesterday.

I wonder if they will offer the Touraeg with the diesel option...and then if so, will Volvo follow suit by offering a diesel option.

I'm pretty certain VW will offer the diesel. As for Volvo, we shall see. They're totally different animals though. 10cyl for towing torque or 5cyl for decent torque, but more for frugality.

The Tourag will be a worthy competitor, but to but the Lex, BMW and Acura before the XC? I don't agree. What XC was used? 2.5 or T6? Knowing Volvo they sent a 48K T6 w/ Vers and Nav instead of what would better be suited for the comparision. I want to see the justification on why the Acura finished ahead.
These magazines can be spiteful...how much of the scoring was to show Motor Trend that their "Truck of the Year" wasn't as touted as they say it is?

The results reported above are accurate, but of course it is difficult to evaluate C&D results because C&Ds overall rating it NOT a summary or average of the test results by category; it is a subjective score based upon the testers' preferences. That said, they found the graphite interior on the test vehicle to be "funereal" and "obsessively drab" (funny, I like the graphite, personally), the ride/acceleration to be "pleasant but passionless", and the steering an "erg or two on the light side" (whatever an erg is).
Performance called "midpack at best, with no dazzling numbers to elevate it in its class". Performance of T6 low enough that they are "skeptical" of the "five-banger".
In fairness, the review seems overly harsh on a number of the models tested, although surprisingly, after all of C&D's negative comments on the XC-90, it finished a mere point behind the BMW X5.
The test vehicle was a T-6 and was probably a euro (MD player in photo). No premium package, so no wood steering wheel to set off the black plastic.
To answer the question above, the MDX was a point or two ahead of the XC-90 in most categories, and while there are no direct comparisons, I suspect the MDX was more highly rated because it was cheaper and the interior was better-liked. (The MDX interior seemed to garner more enthusiasm than the XC-90's despite the testers' criticism of the MDX and their observation that Acura needs to step up the interior a few notches to keep up with the VW's and Lexi of the world).
It wasn't a bad review, but not a great one either. I still feel that the Volvo is a little overpriced given the plastic and fake wood in the interior, and I think C&D feels that way too.

I have not read the C&D article yet. However, one thing that always has struck me about reviews is that they seem to gather some momentum in one direction or another. It appears all the testers, excuse me, editors talk about the vehicles and some theme catches on and is born out in the ratings - good or bad. Kind of like taking two groups of people, showing them a movie, asking them to discuss it, and present their findings. Each groups opinion may vary widely and be dominated by a particular theme - totally unrelated to the other groups theme.
All that being said, I just don't get it with the MDX. The exterior has absolutely no sex appeal, and the interior only marginally more. We kept looking at them over and over trying to convince ourselves to like it and just couldn't find it. Two of my neighbors have the MDX and love it. Most who do feel that way.
The XC90 on the other hand "spoke to me" the first time I saw it in person. It looks bigger and more substantial in person than in the photos. The interior has a very clean stylish feel that we like very much. Faux wood or not. More Euro Sedan like. In comparison the MDX feels minivan-ish to me. Exterior styling is a no brainer. Safety features are a no brainer. The MDX is an outstanding vehicle that is very functional and that is about all I see (which is plenty for sure!). There is just no romance in the vehicle for me.
I guess it just boils down to personal preference for all of us, editors of car magazines included. One persons fake wood and plastic is anothers clean, uncluttered look. One drivers uncomfortable seat or driving position is anothers nirvana. Nice to have so many choices.

Re: Car & Driver Mid-Size Luxury SUV Comparo (AudiPutz)

Good find, AudiPutz!
Lows: Darth Vader interior, novocaine-injected steering.
I would have to agree with C&D on these two. I guess they prefer the same taupe interior that I do, so the interior feel is highly subjective, especially to those who prefer the graphite interior.
The steering on the T6 is overboosted, IMO.
Interesting to note: When we managed to slide briefly off the trail in the Volvo XC90 in the rain-swept outback of southern Ohio, which of the other stalwarts in the test was called to the rescue? The Discovery, of course.
