Can't release rear seat belt V70 XC70

The drivers side rear seat on my 2001 had the seat belt lock up while the seat was folded down, now preventing it from going back up more than half way - nowhere near the latch point. No amount of tugging, gentle or firm, seems to want to get the locking mechanism to release the belt and allow the seat to fold back up.

Just took the cover off (4 little doors, 3 on the side one on top) got one off intact the other two broke, remove T25 and T20) and no luck, one can't even see the belt mechanism. Started to take the latch apart but one of the T40s wouldn't unscrew so reassembled,

Any ideas? Finding an AA81 rear upper seatback won.t be easy.

Common problem; the weight in the inertia reel swings and locks the belt, since it’s not upright. My in-laws ‘02 used to do it all the time lol.

Simple fix. Remove the side bolster (pull straight out near the top, and the bottom has a tab that lifts up once the top is loose). Once removed, you can disconnect the lower mounting for the belt and latch the seat. Reattach the bottom belt anchor and you’re good to go.

Hope this helps,
Joe

P.S. - Be sure to torque/loctite the seatbelt bolt, being a safety component and all. If I recall, the torque spec is roughly 37 ft-lbs. 👍

After you do that, replace the little plastic “button“ that was in the belt webbing.

Then, next time you fold the seat down, it won’t retract enough to get locked.

Volvo added the button to prevent this from happening…

I’m not the best at describing things, but the top should pull toward the front of the car. Once the top is loose, the bottom pulls straight up. VIDA usually has good pictures, I can screenshot one later if needed. :)

But yeah, they tend to stick sometimes even with the button intact.

Thanks, my VIDA is on a laptop that is having some issues. Got the seatback back up after unbolting the lower belt. Seat doesn't quite lock into place think the upper portion of the unlatch mechanism needs to be adjusted since I took it part way apart.

Dismaying that the belt reel still won't unlock, button is right at the edge of the slot (previously I pushed the clip past the button to give a little play)..
