hi all, been a long time since I posted. But still got the bug for a Volvo wagon after all these years, and I'm looking at them again.
It's a big bummer that the V70 doesn't come in AWD or with the T6 engine, so I'm looking at the XC70 as a choice for now. I'm worring though that the suspension on it would be too soft.
I think I read somewhere that you can get the XC70 with the four c suspension though. Is that true? (the search doesn't help at all, as it doesn't like the word "four"!)
If it does, would setting it to Sport or Advanced make it feel more like a wagon/V70, and less like an SUV/crossover?
The mushy driving feel is one reason I'm staying away from SUV's and wanted a wagon, so the driving feel is going to be an important decision for me.
Thanks for any advice!

Just checked, and the 2009 configurator is up already on the Cdn site. Both 3.2 and the T6 in fact come with Four C as an option, under either the Luxury I or II package.
Gotta get down there and see if there's any chance they have one in I can take for a spin. Hoping they'll have a T6 with Four C in stock.
Couple more questions for you please:
1 - Four C on the XC-70 wouldn't drop the height of the suspension too in Advanced or Sport, would it?
2 - How do you think the driving feel would be in terms of would it be more like a wagon or an SUV in Sport or Advanced mode?
Depending on how it feels, I might take a 535Xi wagon and an A6 Avant (if they still make them) into consideration as alternatives, or even the Passat 3.6L 4 Motion... It must be AWD.

Modified by Amiro at 8:28 AM 9-8-2008

Re: Can you get four C suspension on the 09 XC70 T6? (GrecianVolvo)

Sounds like I have to get out there and see if I can drive one. Thanks for the info. It'll come down to driving feel I'm thinking mainly.
I want a wagon and not an SUV or minivan so I can maintain at least some driving feel, must have AWD, and decent cargo space, as we now have a 1 and 3 year old.
Ok, so how about some unbiased advice... What are the pros and cons of the following 3 I'm considering?
I'm considering:
* Passat 4 Motion 3.6L
* Volvo XC70 T6 - comes with 3 settings for suspension!
* Subaru Outback or Forester (know very little about them, and they're at the lower end of my preferences)
Out of question are the:
* A6 avant - more than I'd like to spend, but I don't mind used, if there is a clean low mileage one I suppose, but they're really hard to find
* BMW 535Xi - too expensive
* Merc. E whatever wagon - too expensive
* Saab 9-5 wagon - don't know anything about Saab's and not sure about their quality
There's also a very good chance given how the current Mazda 3 Sport has been so banged up that the wife will do the same to this car, which is one other reason the first 3 above are not being considered. They're too nice and I would just wince every time there's a scratch and a ding... which happens on avg. once a month!
Thanks for the tips!
I had decided on the V50 T5 AWD, but then VCNA foisted the R-Design upon us, so that's no longer an option.
Here's what I can add:
- The Subaru Outback is dull, but capable. It's a great car in the winter. Reliability is mostly good, but my 97 Legacy has had some problems with minor oil leaks and rust (both common problems). A redesigned version should be available next summer. Since you're in Canada, you have the option of the Legacy wagon, which sits a bit lower to the ground, weighs slightly less, and has better fuel economy.
- The Forester has been redesigned for this year and has gotten good if not stellar reviews. I'm not a fan of SUVs, so it's not an option for me. I've driven the previous version. It was nice...for a SUV. Why not look at the Volvo XC60 in that case?
- Why not look at the new Audi A4 Avant? Also, I share your skepticism about Saab's reliability, but the Saab 9-3 should be available with the fourth generation Haldex AWD next year (XWD models). May be worth a test drive in any case. The 9-5 is an ancient design, but I've never driven it.
I briefly looked at the VW Tiguan, but the cargo space is almost unusable.
JK

I just had an Audi A4 sedan for 8 years, and loved it and it would be great to stick with one, but the 09 A4 Avant (which looks great BTW) seems to have quite a bit less cargo space. I don't know, maybe their specs are wrong, but they list it as having only 17 cu. ft. compared to 33 for the XC70 and most other wagons. I hope they're both with rear seats up.
I've not seen it yet in person, and it's about 5 inches longer than the 08 model, but the specs still show it to be about half a foot shorter in length compared to most of these wagons (which are about 190 inches), so I think that might be why it's got less space. Nonetheless, I should see it in person. It's so hard to get consistent specs from the various websites...
Subarus were lowest on the list in fact b/c they just don't look exciting, you're right. And with everything nowadays being almost 300 HP and lots of torque, it's tempting to pass up those big motors, and the Subaru's aren't quite up there.
The Passat seems to have good specs, a nice engine, and a sport suspension too, so I'll have to check it out, but it seems a bit boring in the looks dept.

Don't count on me to support anything from VAG.
However; what about a CPO 535xi? You say they're expensive; but what about buying one here in the States and importing it to Canada?

Bad experience with VW or Audi?
I hadn't considered it, but that's a good point. It's a really rare car though as it's just 2007 and 2008 years at the moment. I just did a search in all of ebay motors and one came up. It'd be a lot easier to pick one up from a border city close to me and be able to see it, but if it's a really good deal, maybe there's a way to get my broker here to do a thorough check on it and buy it sight unseen.
I agree completely. I tried a 530 XiT demo and it was a sluuuug. It was $23k more than the R too. Now a price cut and a 535 would be a different story..

Re: Can you get four C suspension on the 09 XC70 T6? (ktm_525)

The Subaru is a lot smaller than the XC70.
Having driven both the XC70 and the V70 (both with standard suspensions), honestly I don't find the ride considerably different. I would not label the XC ride as more SUV-like than sedan-like. The 4C (on my S80) is great. If it translates to the XC70/V70 the same way, you're bound to like it. On the highway I keep it in Comfort mode. When the road gets small and twisty I go for Sport. And when I'm in a hurry on that twisty I go for Advanced. What is very interesting is that even on smooth blacktop highway if you go from Advanced to Comfort the car just gets smoother, quieter, and more serene. Like someone turned off the vibration machine.

I would have ordered 4C if it was a bit cheaper...
Over here in Australia, it is a standalone option but AU$3950 extra on a car that starts at AU$58,950 so not great value...
