I am in the office, and I don't have access to the Owner's Manual.
Here is what I am looking for:
XV90 V8
Synthetic oil
Ambient Temp range 40 - 125 F
I can't remember if it is Mobil 1 5W-30 or 10W-30. I am pretty sure it is one of this...
Thanks for the help!

Re: Can someone tell me the recommended oil viscosity for a V8? (Emission)

Between the 2 it's 10W-30.
The upper range for 5W-30 is lower, something like 88 degrees or so.

Re: Can someone tell me the recommended oil viscosity for a V8? (1sttimevolvo)

Thanks. I need the upper range more than I need the lower range. I am taking the XC90 to Las Vegas next week, and temps should be about 115 F. on the drive out there. Lows at night will be about 90 F!
Thanks again!

Here is the on line manual for oil on the 2006 V8 (in the office you can still get the info from here):
http://apps.volvocars.us/owner...pg148
Here is the oil viscosity graph:

We live in Dallas.... Temp said 106 today and we use the 10-30 oil... The chart says that 10-30 is
fiune until 104-deg.... Doesnt say what to do if over 104.... Guess we will have to park it on hot
days...
Looks like the V8 cant be driven over 104 either!!

I'm in trouble then. I just drove through Baker California back to Denver. It was 113 degrees in Baker!

Re: Can someone tell me the recommended oil viscosity for a V8? (GrecianVolvo)

I mixed 2 quarts of 5W-30 (for better fuel economy) with 3 quarts of 10W-30 (for temps in the mid-80's). I then put a splash of 0W-40 (for a cold snap) and some 15W-50 (for a heat wave).
I think I am covering all the bases!
(Seriously, the 10W-30 full synthetic goes in tomorrow. If it blows up, it's under warranty.)

At least that's what I've been told.
All kidding aside, with full synthetics like Mobil 1, Redline or Amsoil, this becomes much less, if any, of a concern. Cooler temps run the 10W-30. If you are crossing the desert, use 5W-30. If you have 0W-20 in the crankcase, it's not going to blow up if you are blasting through a 120F desert; it probably won't make a darn bit of difference, except that you might get better gas mileage, which is the biggest driver for the manufacturers to reccommend lighter grades of oil.
JMHO,
Jack

However, the specs from Amsoil and Mobil1 both show 5W30 is not as good in high heat as 10W30 AND the engineers at Volvo are smarter than I am and they say 10W30 is the choice for hotter temps in our hot-running turbo cars so that's the plan I'm sticking too.
LTA
It's still a highly stressed engine (considering its compact size and power output). Regardless of turbo or NA, it doesn't change the fact that the wider range multi-grade oils simply do not do as well as 10W30 in high heat. Yes, it's a pain if you live where the summers get 30C+ and winters dip below -30C. I guess if one is leasing and doesn't give a darn go with the 0W40. But if you plan to keep it for 10 years (or longer) I'd say go 'the extra' mile with different oils for different seasons. It's like any other trade-off, like deciding to go with one set of wheels with all-season tires or two sets with performace for the summer and winter tires for the winter.
LTA
In the meantime, I keep it in perfectly flawless condition, including regular synthetic oil changes and brake fluid flushes every 24 mo. I hand wash/vacuum and polish it every Saturday. I sell nearly all of my "used" cars to family members or friends who have watched my baby my cars.
Our annual temps range from a low of about 35 F in the winter (we never got frost last year) to a high of about 105 F. A trip to Vegas will let the XC90 see 115 F. 10W-30 will be fine.
Oh, I push the poor V8 in the XC90. Hardly a day goes with me behind the wheel that I don't see redline a few times (manual shifting).
