I'm not impressed with the HU 613. Does the optional Volvo upgrade radio, plug and play, on the 613s harness? I assume the dash plate is the same.

Yes, you can swap out the HU-613 for an HU-803, plug & play. Just be sure to get an '04 so that the color matches.

Re: Can I switch out the HU 613 radio (JRL)

Well thats good to know. Now I have a reason to to drop in on selected recyclers with $150 in my pocket. Also I could call if I know they have an old S80. They all should have 803s. There is a local guy selling a Volvo kit, to retrofit the Ps with a wood grain dash.

An '05 is an HU-850 and will not work in an '04 or prior.
Jim is right, I forgot to mention that you will need and amp & cables, too, and a center speaker if you want full prologic--any reasonable small driver that will fit in the dash will work. ProLogic center is just mid-high end fill for the soundstage.
If my memory serves me, the S80's had HU-801's and they are not interchangeable. Only '04 HU-803 from an S60 or V70 will match & work.

It is not hard to modify the plastic piece that is present in the cars that did not come with an HU-803 and or navi; I've done it. Or he can easily cobble something together from a scrap piece of acrylic. Infinitely more complex mods than this have been reported on these forums.
That said, the easiest (and money is of no concern) way to go is oe, of course.
As you note, the $60-75 oem speaker is crap, a $30-40 aftermarket will be an easy improvement. I used a spare car speaker that I had lying around, it sounds no worse than other volvo oe premium systems I've listened to.
As I understand it, the only reason to use the oem is if you have navi (it makes it a lot easier) or maybe on the S60 where the mount is shallow--although my recollection is that when I looked there was plenty of room for an aftermarket 4x6 or similar.
