Just got some new tires for my car. My rims are from an 01 so they are losing their paint a little bit. They are in good shape except one has a chip i will fix. I was wondering if i sandblast down the rims, if i could just paint the rims with some auto paint, like the origianl silver, or maybe gunmetal or something of those colors. My question is, is auto paint hard enough to resist coming off when the tires are put on and will the paint take the heat the wheels get? thanks

thanks a bunch. how did the paint hold up as far as putting the tires on? and any reccomendation with the type of paint to buy?

Sorry, i didnt know if i had to buy special paint since my rims are aluminum. or alloy. My first car being a 64 chevelle, everythinggg was steel so it was just your standard auto paint. I didnt know if i needed something else for alloys. now to find a good color

? what ever color you like and get it either from a autopaint shop or advanced or pepboys.

it comes more down to prep and how you paint for how long your paint lasts.

also you will have to do some touch up if the guys mounting your tires are gorillas

haha ya thats the one reason i am worried about using just regular auto paint, because i figured if i had them powercoated or something it would hold up to the guys mounting the tires on the rims alot better. I guess ill just tell them if they cant do a good job ill bring the wheels somewhere else. Any tips for prep? is there anything special i need to do for prep other than the normal, just making sure the grease is completely off and stuff?

I used duplicolor wheel paint, also engine paint works, know a couple of guys who used krylon indoor outdoor
paint. I was happy with the duplicolor wheel paint though. And a rough grit sanding first then a fine sand paper.

A buddy of mine used the duplicolor wheel paint on his SRT4 wheels. He also used the duplicolor wheel paint clear coat. They still look great 3 years later.

I'd get the Duplicolor Wheel Paint, it seems to work well for most people that have used it. I did it last year and they are holding up with despite the sand and rocks and mud and salt.....

ya i was thinking about it but i just cant bring myself to use a spray can on my wheels when i have a spray gun sitting right at home. But i do like the color, im debating whether to paint them that color or silver

Yeah if I had a paint gun I would have used that instead but I had to make due with the Duplicolor stuff in a can. Though with a lot of attention to prep and taking my time it did come out good enough for me. I am going to be using these as the winter rims with snow tries anyways.
