See photos - keyfob is provided for scale. These parts "fell off" my car, in the drivers footwell about a year ago. Dealer supposedly "reinstalled" them in the fall. They "fell off" again earlier today - they appear to have simply been wrapped thoroughly in duct tape in shoved who knows where in the driver's footwell area. Can anyone tell what it is and/or what it should be attached to?

Larger:
http://www.trackpedia.com/phot...2.JPG
http://www.trackpedia.com/phot...1.JPG
http://www.trackpedia.com/phot...0.JPG
The bigger spring fits snugly in the white plastic bit in the middle, but the smaller spring is loose and doesn't stick. Both black ends are also loose on the spring, so it was pretty much all held together by the tape when it fell off the second time. The first time it fell off, there was no tape anywhere... no idea what the ends of this are supposed to attach to either.
Would be nice to know what exactly this is before sending the dealer service dept a nasty letter.
Wow. I guess the dealer didn't know what it was, so they just stuck it up in there. Obviously you have one installed in that location, if you're brake/clutch is returning to position and working properly.
Did you pay to get it reinstalled before?

Re: (Chilled Man)

That second pic is RHD cars only, mine is LHD
I just found the same pics in VADIS here too. Those parts do look about right, except I've got two connected springs instead of one - the ends look the same though.
Clutch and brake pedal all work fine.
I did notice that right when it fell off the first time, the clutch pedal felt noticeably lighter, however driveability has not been affected, other then getting used to the "different" feel of the pedal for a few minutes.
At the very least, VADIS doesn't call for using "tape" to hold it all together.

Re: (Warpedcow)

What really stumps me is why they would stick the parts back in there at all if they weren't going to do it right? If I was going to check their work I'm sure I would have noticed this duct-taped wad of parts just as easily as missing parts.
335xi sounds more and more tempting

Re: (Warpedcow)

ahhh ha ha, that is sorta funny warped, just wrong though. why they bothered to tape it vs. just throwing the part away i dunno. shady though.
so the real issue is they failed with duck tape... because you didn't notice until it fell again?

Re: Can anyone ID this part? (Warpedcow)

I think JRL might have used those as props in a movie he did years ago...but I wouldn't ask your "service advisor" where it has been.
-Eric

Dude I hope you go to that dealer and raise holy hell. Actually there would be a Sh!t storm coming if that were me.. I would have the managers face under my dash looking at where you found the part and how you found it.

Nasty letters are for denial of warranty coverage.
I would go get a lawyer and put the words "brakes", "fixed", and "duct tape" in the same sentence for him. He will probably work based on a percentage of the settlement you have coming. Call the BBB at least.
Re: (BeerEngineer)

I agree with Beer Engineer... We are not talking about a backyard project here this was your R taken to a dealer and that is the crap that they do. Tell me what dealer did that BS so I can be sure not to use them... Heck I can throw Duct Tape on my own car for free, oh wait I wouldn't!!!
Can I just say I love the pics of the cats!!!

I feel like at least hearing what the dealer (Kline Volvo) has to say about it first. And this particular item is not a safety issue - the clutch just feels a bit lighter - brake pedal is not affected at all.
That said I do have some legal benefits through my employer, so I may just ring up a lawyer and see what he or she thinks... since that will cost me nothing but my time...

And I'm not especially sue happy. On the other hand, you may get EXCELLENT service from here on in.
I guess the question is whether there is another dealer in the area and what is the track record.
