Saw this post (ok, rumor) and thought you guys might find it interesting:
A tip from a reader has sparked some excitement and joyful self-injury in Jalopnik’s day-room. According to a Volvo sales manager, the reader writes, the company is planning to build a hot-hatch version of its upcoming C30 sporting a “an engine derived from the S60 R’s 2.5 L i5 high pressure turbo in the range of around 180 - 190kw” (that’s in range of 250 hp). That would make the C30 a potent challenger to the VW GTI in the US, depending on how it’d be priced ultimately — and if such a Euro-focused car would even be available in the states. Trust that we’ll be saving up our daily meds doled out by Nurse Ratchet for such a day. Here's the link: http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/g...2.php

Re: C30R???? (phoenix)
The C30 show car had a 260hp engine that was adapted from the 218hp T5 engine.
I think price would prevent such a car from coming to America.

Basically smaller bore, R/HPT-T5 rods and low compression pistons.

Re: C30R???? (Johann)

I had a chance to drive an Audi A3 S-line (3.2L quattro with Direct Shift Gearbox [DSG]) last Sunday. Wow! Lots of fun. I priced one out fully loaded and it came out to $43K....Ummmm I think I would rather have a V70R... I hope the C30 would have 250hp and AWD for $35K loaded.

Re: C30R???? (phoenix)

If they make a C30R with the seats of an S60R, count me in.
Seat comfort is so important when you spend an hour commuting.

Re: C30R???? (MagoonR)

The C30 will almost certainly be launched with the T5 engine and dont be surprised if its a proper T5 producing 260bhp just like the show car.
With regards to an 'R' model its certainly possible, engine will obviously fit, AWD will work with chassis so theirs no reason not to other than as mentioned cost. It will be one very expensive and low volume car, the only market the S60/V70R has done well is in the US everywhere else they dont sell well at all so an R could appear if theirs a strong enough business case in the US.

We're having enough trouble getting them off our lots as it is, even with THOUSANDS of dollars in assistance money.
Again, it all comes back to Volvo's piss-poor marketing. Virtually no one knows about the R. Likely the same will happen with the C30 -- it will be a very competitive vehicle, but no one will know about it.

In Belgium it's even worse Johann, I can count the R's in Belgium I saw from launch till now on one hand
(Even less T5's )

In Canada the T5 versions of S60 and V70 are going nowhere fast.
Obviously the 2.5T performance has stuck a cord with Volvo buyers and it says volumes of where the bulk of sales lie, at leat in this market. I would say that performance is nice but it's not the brand that comes to mind when you go looking for it.
