im sorry to say that i was involved in a 4 car pile up today on the I5 north in san clemente. The R is almost certainly totaled no air bags deployed but my front end is completely demolished. I spotted a sonic blue R while i was waiting for the CHP to come and write a report

Sorry to hear about the accident. Glad you're alright though. Quite a few R's on the market to choose from if you go down this path. Good luck!

Re: bye bye R (JRL)

yeah unfortunately thats actually the second time that car has been in a front end accident with no airbag deployment? i don't know if its because of the relatively low speed that the collision actually occurred but both headlights, the radiator, hood, front bumper and everything else are completely destroyed along with what looks like quite a bit of frame damage. My car went under the car in front of me, so maybe i just didn't hit the air bag sensors directly enough to warrant airbag deployment

Sucks to hear about your accident. Glad you're ok. The front end on these cars are super soft. A relatively slow front end collision on my car resulted in almost 10k worth in damage. Not to sound like a jerk or anything but are you considering selling some of your mods?

Re: bye bye R (PhilUp)

yeah absolutely, i dont really have any of the stock stuff left to put on in place of the mods so i dont know if the insurance company will let me part it out after they total it out and pay me, but i will keep you all posted on what may be up for grabs. wheels, exhaust and rear sway will be easiest to get if anyone is interested...

Sorry to hear about your accident. Make sure you are ok by seeing a doctor. Injuries can creep up afterwards.
I would definitely seek some sort of legal advice regarding the non-deployment of the airbags. Maybe you are using choice words but when I hear something destroyed, it means it's pretty bad. And considering you slid underneath the car in front of you, it's pretty bad. To have the airbags not go off is bad.

Sorry about your R atleast you came out of it okay I would be curious to know why the air bags didn't deploy If your able to sell some parts I'm intrested in the stainless brake lines

Re: bye bye R (gradyjoseph)

A few thoughts from someone who has "been there, done that":
1. Glad you're OK!
2. Sorry about the R
3. Go see a doctor. Do not wait. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200 But seriously, when I got hit head-on, this was the best advice I received from SS
4. If the insurance company totals the car, please do not be tempted to start swapping aftermarket parts for the original parts you still have. The hassle is not worth the headache IMHO (especially if you have agreed-value" coverage on your car)
Good luck!
Regards,
Derek

He said he doesn't have them anymore
(Which is why I have said many times, do NOT get rid of your OEM parts unless you really don't have room to store them, THAT then is understandale)

Re: bye bye R (JRL)

i will go to the yard tomorrow and take pictures of the damage for you all to see, last time this happened it came out to 19k in damage but you can judge for yourselves from the pictures whether the airbags should have deployed or not...

Did you hit your head on the stearing wheel? I would think you wouldn't have a leg to stand on if you sued if nothing came of the fact that the airbags didn't delpoy. And you can't say, "my head could have hit if I was going a bit faster," because then maybe the airbag would have deployed.
Sounds like the force wasn't so big but that the damage may have been in part because the OP's front end went under the back of the other car. Also, all that crunching is doing something....it is absorbing energy and slowing down the rate at which the driver is stopping - all sufficiently enough that the airbags may not have been needed.
/rant
Sorry to hear about the car and I hope you are OK...and continue to be OK over the next couple of days when the soreness will set in....

Sorry to hear... I didn't see the accident but some friends who came up from San Diego were late because of an accident on I-5 near San Clemente, that must have been your accident. Glad you are OK and able to type, hope you get all the money you deserve.

Re: bye bye R (atacamaRfan)

thanks for all the helpful words guys, if it gets totalled out ill most likely just take off what can be easily swapped out and leave the rest since the insurance company will own the car from then on. id love to get into another R but i think most other ones i can find will likely be a step down from this one. Im going to play it by ear and see how everything plays out. I will keep you posted though

Re: bye bye R (atacamaRfan)

Good to hear you are OK. This is the second post in a month or so where a front end collission did not trigger airbags. Very curious. But, unless you were very seriously injured, a lawsuit against Volvo is going nowhere. You would pay your engineer more money than you would recover in the suit. And, most importantly, no personal injury attorney would take this case and pursue a claim against a Sweedish manufacturer and an American distributor if the damages at issue are less than a half to three quarters of a million dollars. Thankfully, you apparently were not hurt that bad.
