Buzzing Sound--What is it??? UPDATE

I have an intermittent problem and would appreciate some input from the forum members as to what's going on. I have a 2005 V70R with about 54,000 miles, automatic transmission. The car runs great, I don't notice any problems, but in the last couple of weeks I've heard a loud buzzing sound when I start up the car. It has only happened twice, and most times the car starts great, and I don't hear anything at all. Both times this has happened, the car had been sitting for a couple of days without being driven. The noise is constant and will continue until I shut the engine down and restart it again. On restart everything is fine with no trace of the buzzing sound ??? I opened the hood and the noise seems to be coming from the driver's side by the fuse box or near that area. If anyone has a clue as to what this could be, please let me know. Thanks for your help!
I'VE NOTICED THAT THERE'S ANOTHER CONDITION NECESSARY FOR THE BUZZING SOUND TO START. IT SEEMS THAT WHEN GOING IN REVERSE OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY OR A PARKING SPOT, AND THEN GOING INTO DRIVE IS WHAT'S STARTING THE WHOLE PROCESS. IF I JUST GO FORWARD, THERE'S NO NOISE. AS DESCRIBED ABOVE, IF I TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTART, THE NOISE GOES AWAY. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM AND WHEN THE CAR IS REALLY WARMED UP IT NO LONGER HAPPENS. I'LL KEEP OBSERVING IT FOR A WHILE LONGER BEFORE BRINGING IT IN FOR SERVICE, BUT I'D APPRECIATE SOME FORUM INPUT ABOUT THIS...
THANKS!

Modified by Tess88 at 6:17 PM 7-12-2009

Could be something to do with your emissions pump, but if you don't see CEL I bet you are fine for now.
I think my XC did this once a long while ago, and never heard it since.
Or you could have a bees nest under the hood, you have to watch out for the them...

Tough one to call without hearing it first-hand. I'll throw a few guesses based on your description.
1. Starter run-on.
2. ABS unit building pressure/ freaking out?
Like I said, shot in dark.

Could be the vacuum pump. It is a little forward of the area you describe. When it runs it will make a buzzing noise. It also comes into play after the car sits, and loses vacuum. The part that does not fit is the fact it keeps on running after the engine is started. It should run and than stop after a few seconds.
Do you hear any type of vacuum leak? Does it idle rough?

This probably isn't it, but check your power steering reservoir/fluid level.

Thanks for your input and info about he vacuum leak. This is a really strange one. When the car starts, it keeps running and does not stop and has no loss of power. As long as I don't re-start the car, it continues to make that loud buzzing sound. When I turn off the engine and restart, the noise it gone. The problem is that it only occurs once in a while, so at this point bringing it in for service is probably not going to show anything. The idle is smooth, and otherwise the car runs great, with no diagnostic messages showing up. I've come to the conclusion that my car is slightly Thanks to everyone for their input, but at this point I'm thinking that perhaps the starter is getting stuck. I don't know if their are any remedies for this, or if it will eventually work itself out or bite the dust. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks to all!

Do you have wipers for your headlights. My buzzing sound turned out to be a motor for those wipers that was installed incorrectly and thank God...because it led to a bunch of other problems which were the result of inexperienced folks repairing my car after an accident. I
I was told the previous owner died in my car which was his and his wife at the time.A PA Death Certificate was attached to the Title (from PA) because when the wife sold the vehicle it was still in both names. As I was told the poor soul in his early 50s had a massive heart attack. When I called the Volvo dealership in York PA prior to the sale to see if the car had been maintained (it was) the technician said"Is this the S60 the guy had the heart attack in?"
Why do I bring this up? I am starting to think the vehicle is haunted...there have been consistent issues since I acquired the car. Like last week I was washing the vehicle and lifted the windshield wiper to wash underneathe and the blade poppoed off the handle which proceeded to snap against the windshield , make a little hole that grew into an 18 inch crack within 30 seconds. Of course someone could say I was careless but I have owned a lot of cars and this has never happened. Nor getting run into in my first month of ownership. Nor sideswiping a vehicle that was not in the rearview mirror when I looked (I do not drink or drug). Other things as well.
Okay I am kidding (I think, facts are true). Anyone out there in the world of Intelligent Volvo owners know what an R windshield will run me and is there anything special I need to know? Should I get it done at a dealer or will any shop do?

I looked into a new windshield for my '01 and it was $800ish for the Volvo glass and $200 for the generic brand glass.
