Buzzing Shifter Repaired Today

Volvo service fixed my buzzing (in 2nd, 4th and 6th gears) shifter today. On the 15-minute ride home, the shifter did not buzz. (I also thought the shifter felt more precise, but maybe that was just my subjective impression.) I thought you might be interested in the description of the work:

"Tech found shifter cables loose within shifter assembly. Removed air cleaner box. Removed center console side and dash panels. Removed shifter assembly. Replaced shifter cables assembly. Adjusted cables. Test drove. Okay."

glad you got that resolved. ill be getting mine done on the 31st. i dont like the fact that you said they had to remove part of the dash

i hate the thought of it losing any structural rigidity.
I looked over and felt the console. The technician seemed to have put everything back just fine. did not hear any rattles or loose things on the ride home.

I'm happy for you. I guess I need to bring mine out to your dealer. As I reported earlier they followed the instructions in the service bulletin release but they were not able to corect the problem. I too have noticed a difference in the shifter. Not sure how to describe it but I like the engagement and feel more so than before.

I agree on the last sentence.

But you still have the buzzing?

How long did the procedure take?
Not sure. I brought the car in at 7:30. I believe they started the work around 10. It was ready at 2:00. Was not worked on during lunch hour. I am estimating about two to three hours.

I just picked up my R yesterday and am enjoying it thoroughly - well not as thoroughly as I will be as I am trying to follow some of the break-in advice, but it's not easy.

I've noticed a slight vibration when my hand is on the shifter in fifth gear that is not present in other gears. Did your buzzing shifter start out as a buzz or was it a vibration similar to what I've noticed that gradually grew worse and came to include an audible buzz?

Yes. First I had the vibration only. After several weeks it became an audible buzz. But unlike most others on this board, mine did those things only in the even-numbered gears.

I had the exact same issue - not it occasionally buzzes in 5th, but not consistently. I'm still going to have them do the fix.

I recommend the fix. My s60R had the occasional 3rd and 5th buzzing as well. Shift cable change about three weeks ago with no further buzzing! Still has a minor palpable vibration with a hand gently on shifter but I have been very happy with the repair. Mine took about 5 hours and there were 1.6 miles put on the car during "testing". I haven't noticed any changes in the throws/slots.
