Buying from non-Volvo dealer?

Anyone have any advice on buying from a non-Volvo dealer? There's a local dealer - one of those "Kia-Lincoln-Mercury-Suzuki" places - they're part of a local chain which I'm not familiar with. Anyhow, they got their hands on a Blue 2001 S60 2.4T with all the options I'm looking for - for about $25k. My question is, I'm kind of apprehensive about buying a Volvo from a non-Volvo dealer, especially a smaller lot. I haven't had a chance to get over to the lot - and I'm wondering if I should even bother. My reasoning is I think a Volvo dealer selling a used Volvo might be a little more thoughtful in ensuring I'm not buying a Volvo that's been beaten up and thrashed. Then again this could be lucky find - a dealer who doesn't know much about Volvos might not know exactly what he's selling. Thoughts? Advice? Thanks! - neuro

I'm no expert or anything, just a regular consumer who likes cars a lot. I bought a 200 S80 T6 a few monthes ago from a volvo dealer. I know i could have gotten a much better deal from a private seller but i chose not to because there's nothing i hate more than a headache. Buying a lemon would definitly be a headache, not to mention the waste of money. Even though there are a few things im unsure about with my car still, almost everything is under warranty and they take care of me. I'd rather drop an extra couple of g's to not have to worry/possibly take time out of my day to fix the car. Depending on the mileage, a 2001 s60 2.4T from a dealer shouldn't be much more than 30k anyways.

It's like buying that warranty at best buy or whatever. On a 200 product, you pay 10% and you have a garanteed warranty for a year or something like that. I always do it so i never have to worry about breaking it. (i just did that with an electric razor and it's nice to not care whether or not i drop it on the floor) . It's all a matter of preference my friend, but i am happy with what i got from the volvo dealer.

Well, it's like buying a used car anywhere else. They should make sure that the car is sound. YOU should also make sure that the car is soound by having another mechanic inspect it.

The advantage of a Volvo retailer vs. a non-Volvo retailer is that they can check the complete history of the car, check to see how many (if any) recalls were performed and (mpst importantly), they can certify it and attach the ever-important Volvo Certified Warranty which is 6 years/100,000 miles.

Ah - the certified warranty - how could I forget about that! I think that within itself is a good enough reason to stick with a Volvo dealer. Thanks!

yeah, unless whereever you buy it from have warranties like than or its SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper (like over $3k) then just buy from a Volvo dealer.

Don't forget to look up how much a car is REALLY worth and negotiate accordingly.
