Hi all, I'm new to the boards and i know its never good to start with a new topic .

Anyways, I'm interested in getting an S40, and might pick one up coming Tuesday if all is well, just want to know if there are any things to look out for when buying a used S40.
The one I'm looking at so far is a 2005 S40 T5 FWD aero package 6speed with 75,000km on it, is there anything i should be aware of with these cars with this many km on it, what starts to go out first and what not, I've heard that they tend to have some electrical problems here and there but mechanically they're pretty solid?
http://img36.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=20685459.jpg

You might want to find one that is AWD. Easier said than done. I recommend studded tires come winter time though. These cars have too much torque, and then the boost kicks in. You have to be really light on the throttle, or your stability control will be taking over a lot.
As far as other options that you should look for, if you want to have other options as far as sound, find one with premium audio. It has a cd changer, and an aux input. Without it you are stuck in the world of fm transmitters.
There are a lot of options on these cars. Hard to say what the one you are looking at might have, and what you might be missing.
As far as maintenance and other stuff that's coming up, I'll let someone else field that one.

This one has the premium sound package . Minus the wheel spin issue in the winter time, how is it overall for a winter car? rust etc...

btw the car is going for 15,900...too much? too little?

It's not a rip off, especially if it is a very clean car, but there is room to wiggle around a bit.

Re: Buying an S40 (highc0ntrast)

I would check to make sure all of the recalls that have been issued for the 05's have been serviced. Main thing is the PCV oil trap issue that many people have had to fix. There are reoccurring issues that almost everyone here has run into.
Also, with an 05, I would make sure the battery is new.

If not, then oh well, the FWD will be fun too. But AWD in the snow can't be beat.
When I got the car, I loved it right away. Decent amount of power. Turbo boost was nice and linear. The car handles nice, and drives great. After adding a few bolt-ons, I love it even more. I bought it with 17k miles on the clock (roughly 27,000 kilometers.) Its now at 37k miles (59,000 km). No problems so far. Haven't had to replace anything, short of maintenance parts. If you like it, go for it. You won't regret it.

Considering you're from Canada (like me) that is a really good price!
I haven't had any issues with my car and have been extremely satisfied with the overall quality. It's tough to find a reasonably price, well optioned car with good power but the S40 certainly delivers all that. Cheers!

Yeah decent price for Canada. My car actually came from your hellhole province. It's something I found out after purchasing it, and it pisses me off. YES, I have rust. Something I wouldn't have if it were an SK car. Makes me mad just thinking about the rot that's going on under it.

Well Volvo uses it the same as the rest of the automotive world. PCV= Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Ours are faulty, there is a recall to fix it. Should be free, regardless of warranty, I believe.

Re: Buying an S40 (highc0ntrast)

I just got my 2006 S40 T5 AWD last month from the Villa. Where did you find the 2005 T5? That seems like a VERY good price. Upon a bit of mod and taking it to the track, a friend of mine is now interested in the S40 too. The Villa on Steeles have a 2006 S40 T5 AWD with 57,000KM. It is Black Sapphire....my friend really likes it but like me, he wants the 6 speed manual and this one is auto. If you don't mind an auto, you should go and check it out. Look for Aaron, we got a couple cars from him....might be able to throw in some stuff for you.

I thought mainly cars from back east suffered from the salt road induced rust. Sucks to have rust on a relatively new car.

Rust already on an 05?? Wow. My wife's 95 850 T-5R has no body rust and it's been in VT for 8 years, CT before that...

Rust on the undercarriage, and suspension bits. None on the body panels or anything. The aluminum I can see under the hood (under that sea of black plastic) is corroded as well. It's not noticeable until you look.
...or try and put new suspension parts on.
It pisses me off because cars here don't rust, and my old POS didn't either. Not cool to have it on my newer car that's not a POS.
