I'm looking into buying a 72 0r 73 1800ES..Perfer a Cal Car....I've been warned by my Volvo mechanic of rust even for a Cal Car and to beware of frame bulk because of extra weight of the back and glass...He says he has seen this problem over and over...Is This true...What else should I look for?
85 245ti

Frame Bulk? What is that?
Sure, you could have rust even on a CA car but no where near what we get in the north east.
Check the most rust prone areas first (The splash plates that bolt in behind the front wheels, the area around the headlights and the frame area around the front jacking points).
Of course in CA you could get floor rust because of leaving the windows open in that beautiful CA weather and it does what's not expected, it rains!

Volvobob

I'm not sure what he meant either but he did say that the car was not engineered for the added weight of the back portion and glass .... Any comments or problems with this????
Thanks

The only problem, I could think of is that the rear springs might not be up to snuff. You can always get new ones.
I've seen another problem with the rear on 1800's (P,S,E &ES) at the top of the rear wheel opening. Some are buckled there. This is usually due to being tapped in the rear.

Re: Buying a P1800ES (gdill2)

The rear window wasn't engineered very well, and if the drain holes haven't been looked after, that's the worst place for rust. Pull the rubber gasket away to see the real extent of the damage.
Ask me how I know.
