Installed a set of Autolite Iridium plugs in my 2001 V70 T5 last December. The car developed a miss around 4,200 RPM after only 3,500 or so miles. As this is my first turbo experience, I learned that iridium plugs don't fare well with the temps in a boosted motor. I switched to Bosch Platinum in Feb. and got about 4,000 miles out of those. This time (from advice on here) I went with plain ol' copper plugs (Champion). Sure enough, I'm developing a miss again. Each time, fresh plugs have solved the problem, and the plugs have been fried every time. It there any reason for this? I don't think that I would be running lean, but it's a good chance since I do have 2.5" turboback with only a dynomax race muffler on there. Any ideas?

Re: Burning through plugs??? (JTapper)

I've used plain ol' copper Champions in all my white engined Volvos and they have worked the best of any plugs that I've tried. They would last almost forever in my NA V70, but only good for about 20K kms on my 850R and XC. But in any case, I have never had the trouble you describe in so few miles.
Cheers,
Bill

Re: Burning through plugs??? (JTapper)

Several months back when I did my 1st tune on my 01 V70 T5a, I asked around and the concenus then was get Volvo OEM. I did just that and haven't had any issues at all. Sure, more money but they work!
Jerry

I wonder if cold plug versus hot plug comes into play in this gripe? Maybe he's using too hot a plug and it's killing the plug service life?

Re: (ifnt420)

Guys, come on. Just read your owners manual as it tells you right in there what plugs to buy and it doesn't say buy the ones with the Volvo label on them.
In my case ('02 XC), page 142 states "Spark plugs: Champion RC8PYP 8 (or equivalent)" This is a resistor-style double platinum in the "8 heat range". Interestingly, the Champion reference book calls for the same plug but in a "12" range.
In any case, why pay the exorbitant dealer price when you can find the appropriate plug at your local parts store.
Cheers,
Bill
