I'm going to check out this car tomorrow. What do you guys make of the color? I've never seen atacama brown like this before. You think the leather is too bad to be rescued?

Also, I've read that most people recommend getting an extended warranty on R's. This car has 53,000mi on it, and the angle gear, clutch, and slave cylinder were all replaced about 10,000mi ago. Seems like all the big stuff got taken care of. Should I still spring for the warranty anyways?

Thank you so much for your advice!!

It could just be insanely dirty?

Though I hear it is supposed to sort of become brownish with age, but that looks pretty darn aged.

In any case, yes, the seats can be redyed back to their original lighter orange color--and they'd probably need to be redyed and repaired anyway with all of those visible cracks. Keep them conditioned after that and they'd be fine.

But yeah, those are the most damaged atacama leather seats I've ever seen.

Extended warranty with these cars is generally a good idea depending on the quality of the warranty and how much mechanical knowledge you have.

There's also a huge stain on one of the back seats and the volvo dealer barely budged on the price (it's...probably 1-1.5K more than anybody here would spend on an '04R from a dealership)

Sigh....I may have to just suck it up and buy it...I'm sick of the hunt.

I don't know too much about leather, but I'm assuming, even though the leather is in terrible shape, it's not going to crack open so long as I take good care of it right?

Should you decide to buy the car, I would recommend cleaning the leather thoroughly with a mild soap (woolite) and water mixture, and then liberally applying Lexol leather condiitoner. As long as the leather isn't "too far gone", it should provide a reasonable service life if regularly condiitoned. Don't use anything too harsh to clean Atacama, it is a naturally dyed leather and isn't sealed like most autootive leather.

Performing a search on "cleaning Atacama leather" should yield a fair amount of reading material. Good luck with the car deal.

Once Atacama "turns color" that's it.
Cleaning it will not change the color much, besides that one has SEVERELY cracked seats.
I've sold R's with 125K miles and the seats were better than this one
They're shot

The car only has 53K on it and the seats look like that???? Maybe atacama is less durable then gobi and nord for some reason, I doubt it but maybe a theory. All other aspects of the car may be in fine shape. As bad as the seats look, that should be no reason to shy away IMO.

That interior reminds me a an episode of Seinfeld.

Why not check out the V70 R that JRL has for sale?

That leather looks more like "distressed" than Atacama.

It DOES look a bit dried-out and scuffed-up.

However, it does not look like any of the damage involves cuts and/or rips.
(Maybe the previous owner parked it outside, in the sun or used some sort of leather cleaner / treatment TOO frequently?)

My guess is that some cleaning and conditioning will soften-up the leather and keep it from deteriorating much farther - however, you're probably stuck with the discoloration.

This looks like one of those spray on, leather repair jobs gone wrong to me. Shame....

after some coffee and coming back to this thread.

I'm going with JRL's assessment--> those seats are shot

there is no bringing them back. I've never seen atacama look so poor.

you might be able to bring these seats to an "every day" use but they will never be show quality. You need to get some leather food for it and run through a treatment session and see what that does for it.

I say: Get one that's not an 04. Even if it's atacama... You still have to deal with all the 04' issues. Steering rack/pump, uglier interior which gets so ****ed up so easily, and the black trim....

no R is full proof, get one that was well taken care of with good service history regardless of year unless you are getting a gt. Than i would go 06-07 for transmission reasons. I'd take one with twice the mileage if it was well kept over one that wasn't treated so well. Some 04's were excellent reliability wise.

Thanks a lot for the responses. This is making the decision quite a bit harder :/

As far as looking for a newer model, ....I've been looking for an R for 2 years now, these things just don't pop up that frequently in my area (for the 6-speed). I'm about to give up..
I kinda like the plastic(?) trim on the 04's, so I'm cool with that, but if the seats are as far gone as everyone says they are...crap. I have some pretty messed up leather seats in my current car, and I don't wanna deal with that again. I don't mind it not being "show quality", I just don't want it all falling apart in a year.

Tell the dealer to recondition the seats or wiggle on the price. Chances are that R isn't going anywhere fast since it's a 6speed, with that interior, and it's a Volvo.

Better yet, go get your best off in cash, wave the cash in front of his face; if he doesn't budge, then walk away. Most dealers are so addicted to cash payments they'll make it work.

Northern California. I'm embarrassed to say the price. I've been looking for an R that had good maintenance history, and was sold at a dealership, preferably Volvo (or from someone here on swedespeed). This one was serviced exclusively at the same Volvo dealership, the mechanic knew about the car in and out, so it was a good sign. I mistakenly hadn't checked the classifieds here for a few months, so I may have missed out on something local....

uuggghh....the negotiated price is just above 15K -_-;
