Broken spark plug - cause?

I just changed the spark plugs in my 2002 S60 base (non-turbo) using genuine Volvo plugs with 3 electrodes. I started the car and immediately had a rough idle and then a misfire on cylinder 1.

When replacing the plug initially, the boot separated from the coil with the metal portion remaining in the boot. When I had the misfire, I figured I hadn't put this coil back together correctly and maybe damaged it. I removed the coil, but when I pulled the plug only half of it came out. The plug was completely sheared at the base of the ceramic. i put one of the old plugs back in and an old coil from when I replaced them a few years ago. Now the car is running fine.

Do you think the coil caused the spark plug to break, or was the plug defective? Can a misfire break a plug? I don't want to keep running the old coil (it is one of the factory originals). I don't know if I should buy a new coil, or put back the one I have been running for a couple of years. I don't want to use it again if it might have caused the broken plug.

I believe it was poor construction as you could see how the ceramic had been pushed up from tightening plug, not like the socket was mis-aligned and cracked it from sideways pressure. A misfiring plug doesn`t always fry a coil. Misfires have codes that can point in the direction of the problem. Your OBD scanner will usually show misfires here and there on a well running engine.
