Hi all,
For once I'm posting because I know what caused the weird sounds my car made, instead of posting to ask others what they suspect. I thought I'd share the symptoms in case others might find it useful in the future.
Last week, I heard an odd twang sound from under the rear half of my car, as I pulled into a left turn away from a stop sign on a slight hill onto a level street. I peeked around underneath for any obvious problems when I next pulled over, and didn't see anything. Everything still felt solid, so I continued along my way, thinking that perhaps I'd just hit a twig that jumped up and banged against something that resonated.
The next day, pulling right into a driveway and then an immediate left into a parking lot, I heard it again. This lead to some concerned frowns and more looking around under the car, including some playing with my front swaybar endlinks since I know one of them is starting to knock periodically (though I was told it still had a fair amount of life on it, and that it would probably hold quite a while until I get the car in to do the shock replacement on all four sides like I'm hoping to do down the road... considering swapping out the Bilsten HD's for a set of their TC's to soften up my ride on rough commute and truck hammered urban freeways). No signs of problems. As I sat and ate breakfast, I remembered some descriptions of XC70's making twanging noises because of dislodged bump stops or rocks stuck in spring coils. I made a mental note to get the car in and looked at with that in mind as soon as I got back home after the weekend. (I was off visiting some family, but well within my AAA towing radius if something came up)
Sunday night, I back out of a parking space and hear a squeaking noise that sounds like a cross between bad brakes and a bad mattress. I glance around, trying to figure out if it's coming from me or another car.. and it vanishes as I pull out onto the road. I cross my fingers that it's another car, and underline that mental note to get the car checked ASAP. I call the dealer Monday morning, the earliest they can get me in and offer me a loaner (vital for my job) is today. Ok, the car is still driving rock solid, it's just squeaky, I figure I can nurse it a few miles each day on city streets. I have my roommate push on the side of the car to rock it back and forth while I peek and listen around the back, and it sounds like the noise is coming from somewhere right in the middle of the rear undercarriage. Ok, well, at least it's not the shocks or springs.. then what? I start dreading that it's the rear sway bar, especially after seeing the price on the IPD site and not realizing that's actually for a front and rear pair.
When I pull out of the driveway this morning... silence. No squeak. Buh? Of course this happens the day it's going to the dealer.. I find myself almost hoping it's something that was wearing through and completely broke, so they'll be able to find it, and not write it off to me being nuts. I got my wish, they called me about an hour and a half ago to report the rear swaybar had broken clear through.
Turns out Mr. Previous Owner had only put an IPD bar up front, the rear was still stock, contrary to what Smythe in the south bay ( ) told me when I had them do the pre-purchase inspection, which also missed things like a stress fractured coolant tank that McKevitt in San Leandro ( ) alerted me to and replaced at my first oil change. After my mother (praise her ever-present curiosity) pointed out that the IPD price was actually for the full front and rear set, I called them up, found out they could source me a rear bar for less than the Volvo part, and have it to McKevitt by Monday. I wasn't about to turn that down, especially with their lifetime parts backing on their swaybars! I think after overnight shipping and the extra day for the loaner car, it comes out to like $30 more than the volvo part. But, I feel the upgrade's worth it.
So.. anyway.. I hope this information is never of use to anyone, because all your swaybars hold true... but should someone find themselves wondering what the funny twanging and squeaking noises coming from their rear suspension is, perhaps this will be of assistance.

Re: Broken rear sway bar - twang and squeak noises from rear suspension. (kageryu)

Hmmm, "twang" sounds about right. I've heard that on a few random occasions, usually as the car flexes in and out of a driveway. Perhaps I better climb under and take a lookee.
(I've always thought it was just the springs stretching.)
Thanks for posting.
