I'm set to take delivery of my 2002 S60 T5 (Manual) in about a month. Wondering if you had any thoughts on breaking the car in being that I've heard many things. I've been told not to really do any hard driving for at least the first 500 miles at which time I should get an oil change, then I can start to get on it. What is the real story. Don't know how long I can wait before seeing what she can do :)

Thanks...Jfilez

Hello,

1. Try not go above 75 mph for the first 1200 miles. If you are on the highway at higher speeds, try to vary the road speed and don't spend to much time 'crusing' at one steady speed.

2. Keep the revs below 4500 rpm, but it is good to vary engine speed during the break in period. Just drive normally, but don't overtax the engine. Changes in engine speed is more important than changes in road speed for the break-in period.

3. Most people agree that using synthetic on turbocharged engines is the best way to go right from the start. Most Volvo turbo owners agree that Mobile 1 is the best synthetic.

4. Volvo has a long and distingushed record for turbocharging. With today's turbocharged engines, it is not really necessary to wait before shutting the engine down when driving slow, but it would be a good practice if you want long and useful turbo life. Although, it is always a good practice to wait up to a minute if you are turning off the engine after high-speed driving. This waiting period lets the turbine spin down and lets the oil circulate freely before the engine is turned off.

I hope this helps!

It is funny that you ask that question, because I use Castrol GTX in my Volvo and it has run almost perfectly for 80k miles, plus the fact that I change the oil every 3,000 miles. It does not burn a drop of oil. Although with that said, my car is not turbocharged, so changing to synthetic wouldn't really make much sense in my case. Since you have a new car that is turbocharged, I would go with Mobile 1.

Typically it doesn't matter when you switch over to synthetic. Mobil 1 is probably the best to use. I have used it for years on all my cars. My boss uses it on his off road bike. Every time he breaks down his engine, usually every 10,000 miles, the engine looks perfect.

One of the best ways to break in an engine is to go up hills. Make sure you vary the rpms. Since you have a T5, I would say that going up to 5,000 or 5,250 RPM's would be ok. Since the turbo doesn't really start to kick in at 3,500 RPM's. You're going to need to break everything in. Also, make sure you change the oil at 500 miles. Especially, since a new engine always has metal shavings coming off all the parts in the beginning. This is a ultra conservative way to prolong the life of the engine.

Also make sure that when you take delivery of your new T5 make sure they adjust the clutch to your liking before driving it off the lot.

Good luck and hope you like it.

Changing to a synthetic? Is this something that should be done right away with a new car (less than 100 miles) or is it OK to wait until the first scheduled service at 7500. I've never used synthetic oil in my cars before but then I never had an R before either.

You do not want to change to syntetic until the first scheduled service. These new cars run a break-in oil that helps the engine seats seat in. So if you are going to go synthetic, wait until the first oil change and not before.

I personally use a turbo timer on my Passat (turbocharged) and it works well. Don't have to think about idling her after a hard run or a long highway trip.

Does anyone use Lubro-Molly Voll-Synthese? I'm running that in my engine and it works pretty well. Comes in the 5W-40 weight.

Although I do not own a turbocharged car right now, I have previously owned an Audi A4 1.8T and a VW Passat 1.8T. Personally, I think Amsoil is the "best" synthetic oil, but it tends to be somewhat expensive ($6.00+/qt.) and difficult to find (you won't find it at Walmart, or even at Auto Zone).
