I recently bought a new 2002 v70T auto and while it's a great car, I've been having a very annoying problem with it for the past week or so. Whenever I go to start it in the morning, the car makes a very unusual clicking noise (as if something is caught on the belt and is hitting the stuff around it). When I accelerate, the noise keeps getting louder until 5 - 10 minutes into the ride when it stops sounding.
As I start it up to drive home from work, about 8 hours later the noise is back again.
I brought it to the dealer today but they were unable to do anything because they couldn't reproduce the sound. This is the case when the v70 is restarted in a short period.
I suspect the problem may be temperature related, but we're not dealing with extremes here. It only gets to maybe 50 degrees F during the night time.
I would be very greatful for any insight you guys could offer!

Is it a sound like "tick-tick-tick-tick"?
Yannis

Then the valve tappets are clicking...it used to be more prevalent with the 850s and the older S/V70 and very rarely on the newer models.
I would have your Retailer check the car to make sure that the car is lubricating the valves properly...

Yannis

Re: Brand New v70 makes strange noises (GrecianVolvo)

That's always a problem. There's always something wrong until you get it to a dealer.
A few weeks ago, my Stang would not idle. It would start, I could rev it up, but as soon as I took my foot off the gas, it would just stall instead of idling. I checked and checked everything I could think of. Put all the stock intake and exhaust parts back on the car (HUGE pain in the azz), disconnected the battery for an hour to reset the ECU, checked vacuum lines and intake hoses..found nothing wrong and the problem persisted. Had it towed to the Ford dealer, a tech turned the key and it worked fine, haven't had any problems since
You could take it back to the dealer and tell them what Yannis said, but I don't know if they'd do anything seeing as they can't reproduce the problem. Leave it there overnight and tell them to have a tech start it up after it's been sitting there overnight so they can hear the problem.

The noise is more than likely the serpentine belt. There is a issue with them. Leave the car overnight for them to cold start it. I had mine changed out at 1800 miles along with the tensioner.

You say that your V70 is brand new, but could this be your problem?
http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/ticking.htm
/Steve

Many 2002 models have this problem and the serpentine belt is replaced under warranty.
Yannis
