Brake Squeal Gone!

I finally got the vibration dampers installed and they eliminated the brake squeal. The brakes feel a little more sensitive too.

Also got the handbrake adjusted so I don't have to pull the damn thing up to the ceiling.

Got the double-din Volvo dashkit and will be installing the Pioneer AVIC-D1 sometime soon (whenever I have time). Although, I want to get the windows tinted first.

Things to come are:
- wheel spacers (10 front, 15 rear)
- dual exit exhaust

Question . . . I have the sport kit and want to get a dual-exit exhaust . . . does anyone have pics of the right exhaust insert modified for this? I am interested in seeing how it looks.

I would surely like to, but I gotta do this one step at a time. I'd like to get the Svenske Stage Two package, but it does not have a dual-exit exhaust. I gotta accumulate some bonuses to convince the wife about spending the money. She'll leave me alone if it is my bonus money.

Re: Brake Squeal Gone! (VOLVO-R)

I've had my 2005 R in twice for brake squeal.

In April, I got dampers and new pads on the front. It helped, but it still squealed.

Last week, I got dampers and new pads on the rear. Again, it's an improvement and I can go a whole day with quiet binders. But now and then, the dreaded tune comes whistling back and it is driving me nuts.

I've asked this before and will ask again-- could this be rotor related and not pads or dampers?

I would love to hear an expert like Richard at Svenske take a diagnostic swing at this problem.

I have an 05R with stock rotor/pad for over 6k and my brake never squeal.

1. Check the wheels to make sure nothing get trap between the wheel and the caliper
2. Check and re-torque the bolts to factory spec (don't count on the dealer or and tire shop to do that automatically)
3. Re bedding the pad and the rotor following the procedures outlined in the stoptech.com web site

I've been reading a lot about break squeal and am a bit concerned. Nothing makes a car look more cheap than the sound of break squeal in a parking garage. It's annoying as hell too. Where can you get the dampers? We're picking up our S60R via OSD in 3 weeks- can I have the factory install them or is this an aftermarket item?

Dampeners are free, parts and install from the dealer...

I still have not heard any squealing. Also, I really have noticed an improvement in braking. I remember seeing another thread about a loss of braking power and I think I fell victim to that. However, since I have had the dampers on I have noticed an improvement. It is probably all in my head though

I agree. Many people ask what kind of car I have and they tell me it looks great. So I talk the car up like it is the greatest thing in the world. Then we go to lunch in it and all they can hear the whole time is my frigin' loud brakes. Well, not anymore. Now I can bloat with confidence

Re: Brake Squeal Gone! (paxcam)

Guys, the reason why it squeal is because you work the brakepads too hard when it's cold. for example, if you drive for a long while without using your brake (on freeway for example) and all of sudden you start city driving.... tight turns, etc..... it wil squeal.

also, another reason is you're using it too often during hot weather and it had a thin layer of glaze between rotor and the pads....this symptom is common for any pads contain carbon minerals....

so don't worry about those squeals...... I doubt Hawk pads or other premium pads will cure this problem... Trust me, you'll hear something.... low or high pitch.

Re: Brake Squeal Gone! (stevectsai)

Before I changed out my stock rotors and pads, I did not get any brake squeal. NONE!!! It was only for about 900 miles before I changed out to the Evolve "E" slot rotors and their carbon kevlar brake pads. Anyone interested in a set of stock rotors with pads, let me know.

I do get a tiny bit of brake squeal when I am braking sometimes - not all the time. Probably about 30% of the time. I think steve is right about the braking when it is cold. I tend to rarely use my brakes except when I am getting off the highway and (of course) need to brake. Then I hear it, but it is not loud at all. So far, I am very happy with them. I will be installing my ss brake lines today (hopefully) and then I should be all done with the braking system.

On to bigger and better things.

Paul--

I'm interested in your stock rotors. Despite getting the dampener fix and new pads from Volvo on front and rear, I still get a horrible-- but not as loud as it used to be-- squeal from time to time. My theory is I somehow burnished the rotors early and they've never recovered.

So, what would you want for the rotors? I probably should buy the pads, too, since you say your set up never squeaked.

Thanks.
