I'm doing the brakes tomorrow and have a question. I have yet to see if the anti-vibration kit was installed on this car. I guess I can check the chassis number but I prefer visual confirmation.

If I need to use the shims, do I lube the shims as well as the brake pads? Or do i just lube the pad backing and put the shims in dry. This all sounds very kinky.

Tanka muchness.

To piggy back on my own thread...what does the anti-vibration kit look like? is it a metal bar that spans across the caliper bolts?

If you're not having a problem, leave well enough alone. Just clean out all the brake dust THOROUGHLY on both sides of the disk using a brass brush to get inside the narrow openings/crevices of the caliper, and then apply lots of goop on the back of the new pads. You should be fine.

Re: Brake shims...(yes, I used search) (Short Circuit)

Thanks, but I'm trying to determine if the anti-vibration kit was already installed. I agree if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm not adding the anti-vibe kit but I can't use the shims if it was.

So I still have questions:
1) what does the kit look like? (a metal bar across the caliper bolts)?
2) if I use the shims, do I goop both the pad backing and the shims?
3) should I use the stuff that came with the pads or the trusty blue brake quiet stuff I've always used?

Unless I'm mistaken, the brake pad lube should be applied between the pistons and whatever they "hit", so if you have a shim on the back of the pad, the lube should be applied to the shim, so that it's between shim and piston. You can apply some between the pad and shim as well, since they might rub against each other, it may help to reduce any squeal there.

I don't know what the anti-vibration kit looks like, but i have the bar accross the caliper bolts too.

Tony, give John at BVV a call, he can tell you what the kit looks like.

Ah, I think I have it then. There is a large, flat-ish aluminum looking bar spanning between the bolts. I'd much rather not use the shims if I don't have to.

But calling John at BVV is a good idea too. I'll give him a buzz now.

Thanks for the help.

Don't use the shims if you have the anti-vibration bar.

I use CRC brake disc quiet (red goop that you put on and allow to dry) and then use the Volvo Gold Robot sex lube as well.

The CRC step is a PITA because you have to prep the pads and let them dry a bit but it's worth it, my brakes are largely silent.

The flat-ish bar is the anti-vib fix. Basically you add weight you alter the vibration characteristics of the assembly. I second the motion on the CRC brake quiet, it works well. I also have the Ti tims that I'm going to install in 2 weeks, I have been contemplating removing my anti-vib infavour of the shims & quiet since that would yield a lower unsprung weight. I'll post how that goes... The Ferodo pads I am running are not annoying, but they are not silent either.

This Volvo Gold Robot sex lube - can I get it at my local Volvo dealer, or do I need to purchase it at a drug store in Sweden? And does the Swedish Bikini Team use it?
