Hey all,
Does anyone know what the "brand new" off-the-lot thicknesses are on our vehicles? I ask because I just had my 15K service done (vehicle actually a little over 16K) and the report stated:
"FRONT BRAKE PADS AT 11MM AND REAR BRAKE PADS AT 6MM. MINIMUM IS AT 3MM."
Seems like a large difference between front and rear currently, so I'm wondering if they started off new at different thicknesses. Otherwise, I have some REALLY uneven wear going on, that doesn't sound right.
Thanks,
Chris
p.s. yes, yes, I should (have) ask(ed) my service technician

I would speculate that the rears wore a bit more than the fronts though. On my 2000 S40, the rears needed replace way before the fronts.

Derek is correct.... The S40/V50 has a rear brake bias to eliminate or at least reduce nose dive during hard braking. I forget the acronym Volvo calls it but it was explained in some detail in the sales brochure. It's tied into the ABS system also. It's been discussed here before that most people have to replace rear pads around 25,000 miles.

Re: (POWERSTROKE)

Thanks for the replies. Just so I'm clear, does a "brake bias" mean the braking force applied is greater? So, a rear brake bias, ostensibly to reduce nose dive, means the rear pads are engaging the discs w/ greater force than the front pads/discs ?
Thanks,
Chris

Correct. But brake bias has nothing to do with nose dive. It's all about balance and control.
I'm not convinced the V50 is overbiased to the rear. Personally I think it's just right. Whether the brake pads wear at identical rates really doesn't matter much, to me at least.
Just be sure you replace them when you feel a loss of brake feel, or if you hear the "crickets" (wear indicators).
Tom.

"But brake bias has nothing to do with nose dive. It's all about balance and control."
Tom - Please explain further. I'm not following Your logic here. TIA

Re: (POWERSTROKE)

I went to my dealer to purchase new front brake pads.
The ones they gave me didn't match the ones I took off the car, so when I broght them back to the dealer and showed them the difference, they didn't know what to say. They even ran my vin # and the computer stated that the ones they gave me were the ones my car needed, but they were drastically different. The ones off my car were even a 1/4" wider.
Any suggestions.

Re: (gargantula99)

Your 6MT+AWD has the larger brakes, and the system thinks you have the smaller ones. Tell them to order the pads for the "16.5" system.
Re brake bias, my point is only that proper bias is done to maximize braking effect. Nosedive is more a function of suspension than braking, actually. If anything, brake bias works opposite to nosedive - if the car dives, you want less in back!

Tom.
