Brake Failure - Stop Safely

My wife was driving our MY2003 XC70 and the following messages came up in display in quick succession

1. Skid control temporarily disabled - Check Engine
2. Brake Failure - Stop Safely

Wife pulled car over and stopped with engine at idle. She called me via Cell and as we were talking the engine died.

Wife was able to re-start engine and the message "Brake Failure - Stop Safely" reappeared.

Called Volvo Service who said if wife comfortable in doing so, drive to local Volvo service center.

Wife was able to drive some 20 miles without issues.

Hmmmmm - what do you think is up with the car ?

Not making light of your situation, but you have made my day. My computer now has a new background image....

Hmmm - what background might that be ?

Well.... after two weeks at the service dept and with some 400 miles driven by the technician the system failures have not re-occurred.

The next approach or plan is now to equip the car with a recorder. The idea here is that when the car is returned to me with the recorder installed I have to press a button when the problem occurs so the recorder can capture that past 30 secs and the next 30 secs of network data traffic. This data presumably will allow Volvo software engineers to pinpoint where the problem originates from.

What to do - I suppose I'll have to comply if I want to get to the root cause.

Re: (barrysharp)

I picked up my car yesterday from Service Dept. They had driven it for around 650 miles without encountering the problem. The Volvo regional techie now says the car cannot be equipped with the recorder or if it were to be it would not be capable of recording the data Volvo wants.

Service Dept & Volvo have essentially given up on me and say they cannot do anything more. I'm to drive the car and monitor the situation and try and note which instrument dials such as Tach and Temp Gauge fails prior to seeing the warning Anti Skid disabled message. LOL - how on earth am I likely to determine that as my eyes are on the road in front of me when I drive. When seeing the Anti Skid disabled warning message it's likely to be many secs or minutes after the message appears.

I'm very disappointed in Volvo over this. My wife is close to refusing to drive the car as Service Dept and mechanic technician have said if ECM fails the engine can die.

Wife and me have lost faith in our '03 XC70. We simply do not trust ourselves to drive it on the highways anymore.

What's the risk I ask ?

Wife and me will try and assess the risk and if acceptable we will keep on driving the car, otherwise it's trade in time for us.

If we trade in will it be for another Volvo ? We have looked at the C30 R-Design and like it very much. We like the smaller size and better fuel use compared to our '03 XC70. There enough room for our two Fox Terriers in the back and two doors although a pain is probably OK as it's just us two that tool around in the car any rate.

If not a Volvo, then maybe an Audi A3 wagon which we have test driven and like it as well. Has a bit more room and it's a real wagon and handles nicely, and has 4 doors.

No matter, Volvo has really let us down on not being able to resolve this electrical problem.

Re: (barrysharp)

This has happened on a few R's. No big deal, it seems to go away
NOTHING will happen to you, the car will stop like it always has and does.
Sometimes a reset takes care of it or sometimes a reload of the CEM takes tare of it, your dealer should have just reloaded the CEM as a precaution, it only takes them about 15 minutes

Re: (JRL)

JRL: I think you are right about this. However, I just have to convince my wife to continue driving it. If I cannot, then it's a question of what car she wants next. She's lost faith in Volvo at this time as her previous car a 2001 S80 T6 had a similar electrical problem where car's engine just plain stalled out when taking right hand turns when coming off a freeway ramp. Volvo could find nothing wrong and after we had this happen 4 times we simply traded the car in - a shame as we really liked that car.

AS time goes by better and better.

Honestly, the approach we've taken is for me to drive the car for next several months and if all goes well wife will take over if she comfortable with it, otherwise it goes.
