I have a 2005 s40 T5 AWD and a friend of mine has the 2004 model with front wheel drive ; as the cars were sitting near one another we've noticed that the brake discs were way bigger on my car ; is it because my car is basicaly heavier due to the all wheel drive or did they improve the brakes in the meantime ? and another thing ,does any of you know what are the dimensions of the brake discs , front and rear on my model ?

Re: Brake dimensions (passat)

In general the brakes are bigger on the newer version.
Spec says 300mm calliper for 16" wheels and 320mm for 17" wheels.
Is this what you are looking for?
http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/te...s.pdf

Re: Brake dimensions (passat)

The AWD with a stick gets the larger front brakes. Non-AWD and autoboxes get the smaller ones. No clue why. It isn't the weight. Not that I'm complaining.
Tom.

i can't seem to find aftermarket drilled brake rotors for my car ; the stock ones are gone in just 25,000 km and not under heavy solicitation ....not lot of "mileage" in my opinion

I had the same problem trying to figure it out, the dealer I went to in Brooklyn, couldn't figure it out either. Tom and Boston Volvo gave me the correct answers.
-Nelson

Re: (passat)

I had my rear wheel off yesterday and noticed "FoMoCo" on the rotor. So you may want to cross shop with other Ford owned cars. The few cars I know of with the 5x108 bolt pattern are Thunderbird, Taurus, and the Windstar.

off topic but anyway: how depressing is it to see FoMoCo branded all over the car? it makes my heart sink every time I see it

Re: Brake dimensions (Dede)

Can anyone offer any insight on fitting 16" wheels on a car that originally came with 17 inchers? Is it possible?

Re: Brake dimensions (Dede)

Yes it is possible. I did it with my FWD T5 when I put on a set of winter tires and had no problems with rub or anything else.

Re: Brake dimensions (Parts @ Boston Volvo)

I disagree. I have the Sport Suspension pckg which came with 17" sag's standard on a 6spd T5 FWD S40 so I would "assume" that it has the larger rotors and the 16" rims that I put on with Dunlop M3 Sport Tires for driving in the snow worked flawlessly.
Unless the larger rotor's are only on the AWD version in which case the above info can be disregarded.
*Edit: just saw that tom pointed out that the larger rotors are only on the MT AWD version....which would make my above comments useless.
On a side note, however, that does mean I can run the larger brakes standard on my non AWD car just fine behind the 18's

Re: Brake dimensions (passat)

I've always read in all reviews of the S40/V50, (T5 FWD,AWD,automatic, manual) that they have 11.8 in. front discs. Same with the Mazda 3. I have a hard time believing that the Mazda 3 comes with these but on the S40 only the AWD manual....

Re: Brake dimensions (s40turbo585)

i recall there was a long discussion on apparent brake disc sizes before..
but if IIRC, the only difference in brake discs were between T5 and 2.4i variants and not as between AWD and non AWD.
Re: Brake dimensions (Mistral)

This is an interesting discussion. I have a Worldpac account, so I pulled up a 2005 V50 2.4i, and checked the rotors. Here's what Worldpac calls for....
15" Wheels - 278mm rotors
16" Wheels - 300mm rotors
17" Wheels - 320mm rotors
Worldpac lists the exact same parts for a T5 AWD as well. Seems to be a wheel size thing, and not a vehicle thing. It would seem that if you ordered a 2.4i with 17" wheels(sport package), you get the big brakes, same as an AWD T5. By this, a 2.4i with sport package would have larger brakes than an AWD without sport package. Odd.
All I know for sure, is my AWD has 320mm brakes, and they are 70% worn after 16000 km. I'm going to slaughter them before 20k, so I can warranty the damn things.
Al

Re: (passat)

Warranty is 1 year, or 20000km, which is why you got nothing at 23000km. I checked mine at 15000, just to see how they are, and low and behold, they're nearly done. I plan on killing them completely before 20000.
Al
