Search function oddly isn't working so pardon if this has been covered already.

My 2011 came with 18" wheels from the factory and I would like to downsize to the thick-spoke 17" wheels that came stock on earlier XC90s (image below for reference).

Test-fitted the fronts and the clearance to the caliper is tight.

Anyone have issues running these wheels on a newer XC90?

Also considering a set of spacers (something mild like 5mm) to provide more margin.

FWIW, I run these 17" Neptunes as winter wheels - more rubber, less wheel, for the potholes - on all 4 XC90 (2006, 2013, and both 2014).
However, given the variety of front brake sizes for the XC90 I can't make a definitive statement.

And yes, it is very tight, especially with the weights. (If I get a stone or ice in there, it won't be pretty.)
Thank you. You've covered just about the entire production run! (y)

A thicker sidewall to better deal with rougher roads is my reasoning as well.

I have one winter tire wheel (don't ask) with these over the largest 336mm front calipers wth no issues. Yes the clearance is tight. 17" Aquarius has better clearance if you can get them.
Thank you.

Have either of you considered spacers?

These H&R ones are compatible and high-quality: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-h-and-r-parts/hr-dr-series-wheel-spacer-15mm-1-pair/3035670/
