Well, after months of dealing with boost issues and the dealer telling me it was the ECU (modded) I did some further research and decided to gamble on a $55.00 part; the TCV. What's interesting is that Volvo is tracking this part based on VIN and mileage. They must have a lot of these failing.

After getting it home, I replaced the solenoid, took it out for a spin (with 101 octane mixed with 92 which should give me somewhere around 95 I believe) and my R is back! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

On a different note, I decided to take the R into the brake/muffler shop that another local R owner had recommended to remove the center resonator. Much, much nicer sound. This, as I have said in the past, is the way the R should have come but all things considered it still is a Volvo.

I just received the "R"Kelly CAI kit so that's on my list of things to do now.

Glad to have my R back! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Boost is back and JRL mod (23109VC)

The turbo control valve a.k.a. boost solenoid. It's the part that you have probably seen on here that is attached to the side of the airbox.

It doesn't throw any codes as other people on here have mentioned which makes it problematic in troubleshooting unless you have a boost gauge which is on my list of things to purchase. I just need to make up my mind which one.

I made a request on that thread as well, but alas still no clip.....
I'd hate to regret spending $100 hacking the exhaust and piecing it back together.

According to people who've done they all say that it's slightly louder on WOT but barely noticable from the cabin and while driving normally. If you're worried about it being too loud, don't. If you're worried that it won't be loud enough, then buy a new cat-back or remove your cat altogether.

Re: Boost is back and JRL mod (flyfishing3)

The Turbo control valve is definately a week link in the chain. I had the same problem a couple years ago with loss of boost. They replaced it. No improvement. The tech didn't trust the part so he ordered another new one. They installed it and again no improvement. That done, they looked at other things. then they replaced it again, and my car was fixed. I think the part is made by Bosch and the tech had said that they have lots of problems with them, in both R's and regular turbo'd Volvos. You would think someone could correct this problem and save everyone lots of time and aggrivation. oclv

No, your stomach does not qualify.
I'm serious, send $10 to a good charity, you'll feel better in the morning.
You will avoid small claims court

Re: Boost is back and JRL mod (dgloveR)

dgloveR,

Finally, a local person who has completed this mod!!! Hopefully, you can help me out with the following. Which shop did you take your car to, how much did they charge, and did they use SS or the aluminum-coated steel? Do you think the shop did a good job of keeping the tips in their original location? I know you have the wagon, so it might not be obvious, but the position of the tips on the sedan is pretty critical. I have yet to hear one bad comment about the resonator removal so it's time to "git-er-dun".

Glad to hear the part fixed the boost issue. Did you volunteer information about the modded ECU or did they figure it out on their own? Just curious.

Re: Boost is back and JRL mod (RainyS60R)

Rainy,

You should take out the resonator soon. Summertime is just around the corner. You could go to Dan's fast muffler, or King Muffler at Kirkland.

We have our resonator taken out long time ago.

I actually got an exhaust pop today (1st ever)! I wonder if not having the center resonator makes it more pronounced to hear.

I didn't think the GTs popped!

Cool!

This is semi-unrelated, but I noticed a lot more burbling and a few more pops today while driving around with the airbox lid and filter "sock" removed. I love the sound and I'd swear the car feels faster, despite the 80+ degree temperatures today, but this could be due more to the removal of the sock. I really don't understand why they put this thing on the car... Lid will be back on tomorrow

Re: Boost is back and JRL mod (djeremya)

djeremya,

Thanks for the tip on local exhaust shops. If the weather continues to be as nice (read hot!!!) as it has been, I'll be spending more time on the boat than in the car. At least the drive to the marina will be a bit more fun!!!
