I have been interested in these cars. Does anybody have any thoughts on these two cars. I don't know much about them but I've started thinking about a bigger car with a manual transmission to possibly replace my S60 T5. Not familiar with this iDrive system that would be in the '04s. The 03 doesn't have that so maybe that's a plus? but then the '04 is the newer body style and have more leg room in the back seat (which is something I don't have in my S60). I considered the M5 but that's way too much money...even for say an '03. This 540/5 seems to be a good compromise with a nice engine and is fast, safe, roomy and comes in a stick.

Re: BMW 545i 2004 vs. BMW 2003 540i (soledoc)

<br>I work for a BMW dealership, so I get to work with these cars everyday. <p>My neighbor drives and '04 5 series 6 cyl. The iDrive was fairly easy to get <br>used to. It takes some time, and patience to learn, but I believe it is quite convenient for automatic trans. people. <p>I guess I am not sure how convenient it would be with a 6 speed manual... Until you learn it, your hands will be fairly busy.<p>Did you know that the sequential manual (SMG) is available on the 545? It actually shifts faster than the standard 6 speed. <br>

Yes I know. I've never driven a SMG. I really want a standard clutch. What exactly is iDrive? How does it affect the driving with a stick? Should I stay clear of that and maybe look at an '03 540i with a standard stick.

Don't answer. I researched it myself. Basically it's the computer control console in the dash. doesn't seem too user friendly.

You may want to check out some of the BMW enthusiast sites like bimmerforums or something like that or roadfly. Former P2 R owner Chuck B knows a lot about BMWs- you may want to IM him with your questions.

Re: BMW 545i 2004 vs. BMW 2003 540i (Wayne T5)

Thanks. I did check out bimmerforums. I may talk to Chuck B. I'm still tossing ideas around. I really don't like the idea of a BMW just because they're so common. I'm also toying with the idea of the new C70 for my stable in addition to my '98 V70R and my wife's Porsche Cayenne. I kind of would like a full size sedan with a stick, but that idea of having a coupe/convertible 6 speed manual volvo is also interesting. The R is still a possibility, but it's not "so" different from my T5 as my wife puts it and she really likes BMW, Audi, and new C70 for me.

Well put. Unless you find a ED USA SPEC 7 stick car here that some guy really ordered right. And then lost interest in after few years.

Soledoc- im considering one of the cars on your list: the E39 540iT ('02-03); I'm ONLY interested in the wagon thou <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://********************/smile/emthup.gif" BORDER="0"> . Those are a rare breed and if my cards fall right, i'd like to get one for the spring!!! My co-worker has a '03 530i SP(as in sport Pgk) and it's a great handling car. My T5 still pulls away from him at all speeds, but his car just feels better. Im on bimmerfest.com and roadfly.com all the time getting info; u should too! I would say go for the '02-'03 E39!! Getting one with most options may be hard thou (less then 5 in 100 have a Navi in the E39 style <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/zeroforum_graphics/screwy.gif" BORDER="0"> ); most dont have SP (unless it's the 6sp) and they are still $$$ with CPO. Good luck

Re: BMW 545i 2004 vs. BMW 2003 540i (JRinPR)

That's what I thought. I don't like the newer body style either. I will look at the '02-'03 540i then and I only want a 6 speed manual. My one concern would be the service on these. I've heard bad things about the service/reliability of these. Especially coming from volvos.<p>I'm still considering the new C70 to replace my T5 or the BMW. I know they're different cars and I'm a little hesitant about going to the BMW but I'm willing to consider them.

That's good to know. What's your opinion on these cars Jim? Somebody mentioned the '02/'03s...anything wrong with the '01/'00 models?

Re: BMW 545i 2004 vs. BMW 2003 540i (soledoc)

I'm probably buying an E39 wagon tomorrow since I just sold my R. From my searching it's been hard to find any '01s and older with low mileage, seems the cut off is '02 for anything under 40-50k miles. All the '01 and older E39s I've been seeing are 80k+ miles. The BMW inline 6 is a work horse motor much like the old redblocks in the 200 series volvos. I've heard that 4.0l has had some issues, but what I don't know.<br>some basic E39 info.<br>'01-'03 525i M52 engine<br>'01-'03 525iT M52 engine<br>'97-'00 528i M52 engine<br>'99-'00 528iT M52 engine<br>'01-'03 530i M52 engine<br>'97-'03 540i M60 engine<br>'97-'03 540iT M60 engine<br>'99-'03 M5 S6? engine

That's what I've been finding too about the older E39s....lots of miles. That's interesting you're selling your volvo for a BMW but still keeping another volvo in the stable. Kind of what I'm thinking about doing. Let us know what you end up with tomorrow!<p>Thanks for the engine info. I guess I would be looking for and M60 engine. BTW, what's the difference between the 540i and 540iT...I'm assuming auto vs. manual.
