The face plate of the speedo cluster is slightly different than my wife's '99 S70 but at night the instrument clusters look the same. The 00 brochure mentions "blue tone" but I'm not seeing it.
Are the Rs suppose to have a different illumination than other Volvos?

Re: Blue tone illumination on 98-00 Rs? (83caddy16v)

Yes, but for only 99+ MY only I believe. It will cost you an arm and a leg to convert and lots troubles to deal w/ the MVA/DMV ppl to get it through.
I've checked many many times then.

It is not the illumination that is special on my 1998 V70R. It is the gauge face which is an incredibly Swedish flavor of blue. Illumination is a standard nuetral green. Converting would be a picnic if parts were available from Volvo or salvage or the aftermarket at reasonable $.
I believe the '98s were the first to receive this particular treatment. I am in awe of the '03 70R instruments featured elsewhere on this site. In fact the interior is inspirational. The shifter looks a little like it got the cheapo Japanese wannabe Korean electronics silver treatment to me.
Now that gives me an idea for a project. Anybody know where to find an interior from a '03 V70R? Cheap?

A picnic? I'd like to see you have that done. They don't just offer you the faces, it's actually the gauge cluster assembly itself. And I didn't know they were not that strict over there....don't you need to have the odometer calibrated and authroized by the DMV ppl before you can actually put on your car?
I only saw they started the effort in showing the blue gauges when they came out the Laser blue V70R in 99, never saw that earlier, but I could be wrong. Maybe Yannis or others can give us some insight here.
Int. part for 2003 R? Cheap? I'd think they need the car out in the market first before offering parts for it.

I have never seen "BLUE" lights in the instrument panel of any R model. As it was, correctly, posted above it was the face of teh speedo and tachometer.
BTW, guys...do not refer to the new S60Rs and V70Rs as "2003" models. They will come out as 2004 models.

Yannis

USA is EASY to do anything to your car

At least in Michigan. We have no inspections of any kind whatsoever. For about 5 years we had emmissions certifications but that was short lived in the late 1980s. In order to register and get license plates for a vehicle old or new you need an address/identification (a current driver's license is not a requirement!), a title for the vehicle and proof of insurance. In order to get insurance you need $75, a vin and a pulse.
Re: my picnic (above) a simple cluster swap would be no worse than a couple of hours if the dash panel (cover) must be removed. '03 R interior parts cheap was a joke! Oh yeah... '04 R!!!

quote:
I have never seen "BLUE" lights in the instrument panel of any R model... Yannis

Yes, Yannis is correct on this. The V70R's of any year never had blue illumination, just the faces and dial heads of the instruments were blue. At night the color was of course greenish/white, but any light reflecting off of the faces could slightly show the blue color. I asked this same question to a 2000 'R' owner a while ago.

I think that the new 04' S60R/V70R actually have blue illumination, but I am not exactly sure.
-Drew

I just wonder if they would just sell the cluster faces only. And It'd be nice if they raise that max speed to 180 mph instead.

I'm sure you could get the part from the dealer if it fit. I have swapped several VW clusters and components of clusters. The 160mph speedo cluster that I swapped in my current VW had mileage within 5k miles of the previous speedo so I didn't worry about it. As long as the mileage is greater than your last inspection it won't be an issue....plus you can always roll the od forward or backward if needed.
