Sometimes I just don't get it.....
I told Volvo last December when I placed the order for my OSD XC70 that I wanted an engine block heater installed when the car arrives. They confirmed that it was the same model that Volvo advertises on the official U.S. Volvo website. The same was further confirmed last week by the salesman.
Today, the parts/service department tells me that the U.S. spec. block heater is NOT the same as the one in the picture, but will have a cord hanging out the nose of the car.
This is what it should look like according to Volvo USA: (you may have to scroll to find Engine Block Heater...
http://www.volvocars.com/us/mo....aspx
Why can't Volvo get this one right? Another member complained on this forum long time ago about the same thing (and it involved the same dealer).
For now I cancelled the block heater until I can determine that I can hide the cord in an acceptable way. Does anyone have a tip on how you hid the cord?
freezingalaskan

Re: Block Heater Bait & Switch (freezingalaskan)

Could the parts/service department person be mistaken?
The Volvo accessories catalog describes it as shown on the VCNA web site:
Complete engine heater kit US CA, 115 V Gasoline 6-cyl 30660 513
The front inlet socket is fitted on the left-hand side of the front bumper giving an integrated appearance and easy access.
http://vccs.volvocars.se/acces...6.htm

Re: Block Heater Bait & Switch (Calhon)

Thanks for your tip. I followed your link, called the local Volvo dealer and their service rep said that yes, that is the part number they are using, but the pieces they get still excludes the nice bumper hookup.
I really think that Volvo needs to remove the picture from the U.S. website to avoid unhappy customers.
Or better yet, make this product a reality for the U.S. market.
Again, any tips on how others made a nice install would be appreciated.
freezingalaskan

Sorry to see that they have not fixed this. It was a year ago when I talked to everyone who would talk to me about this and still it is a problem. I have the plug hanging from my bumper and even with the rebate Volvo gave me when I complained, I am angry every time I look at the front of the car.
Kevin

Re: Block Heater Bait & Switch (Needsdecaf)

Reread FreezingAlaskans last post. The dealer here in not providing the nice clean exterior hook uplike the photo on line even with the same P/N. I got the same story last year. When I went up to Volvo all I got was we are sorry so here is 10% rebate. FA gets the same thing now. The very nice service writer said, last year, that she had never seen anything other than the plug hanging out the front. I showed her what was on line.
The integrated plug as shown on line is not what they are installing here.
Kevin

Re: Block Heater Bait & Switch (PhotoKevin)

The quoted text above is from the VCC international website and is inaccurate when it comes to North America. Only cars in Europe have the connector integrated into the bumper. I will see about getting the European connector picture removed from the US website as well as the erroneous text from the international website.
I suspect that low annual sales have prevented VCC from investing time and money into designing a 110v through the bumper connector.
As the plug mounts in the lower grille area, it can be secured in such a way that it is almost invisible against the black grille. I had one installed on my 2009 S80, though it is very dependent on the installer how neatly it is done.

Thank you for your efforts. There is a video on the XC90 site as well. If you could look into that as well.
Kevin
