I was browsing around last night and I came across this product, VHT Nite-Shades:
http://www.vhtpaint.com/niteshades.html
Blacking out the tail lights on my car is something I have been wanting to do for a while so I was wondering if anyone has tried this product and if so, how were the results. Also, anyone try any different products and have good results. Other suggestions, I would appreciate it.

I've used it before with great results. As with any paint, lights coats until the darkness is where you want it to be is the best way to go. If you wax it the day after you paint it, the tint will shine nicely also.

I've used it, it's a miracle product.
Thin, light coats are your friend. 4 coats will make it look super black, but you will still be able to see the bulbs at daytime.
Wet sand, clean, spray, spray, spray, spray, wet sand, and add a clear coat. Very simple to do

I really don't like when tint is light on the tails. I think if you're going to do it, it's either none, or all out, otherwise it just looks cheap.

Yea, I was worried about getting rear ended, thats why I was looking for pictures of a night shot of tail lights that have been nite-shaded. Anyone got any with the brake pedal pressed down so I can see just how bright they are?

Re: Blacked out tail lights (MacedonianVlad)

One of the R guys has some nicely tinted tails.
From the pic they don't look too dark:

Here's the thread from the R section: http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=121541

Just to add my $0.02.....
I have been using spray paint products for years with no problems and wanted to smoke my taillights a bit so decided to try the VHT Night-Shades. I tried it on a set of flash to pass lenses from an RX7 and was really surprised by the results.
This stuff is very runny and very dark. I found it impossible to get the light shade I wanted no matter how light of a coat I used. It is very spotty and you need to apply many coats to get any kind of even coverage and by that point the lenses are black.
I tried wet sanding the lenses back to a lighter color and was not pleased with the results. The consensus that I have found about VHT is that it's much easier to black out lenses than tint them with this stuff. That R above is certainly not VHT, that's clear coat with black added and sprayed from a HPLV gun.
Long story short, if you are going to attempt this I suggest you try it out on something other than Volvo lenses to make sure it's the look you want.

Re: (volvo0toS60)

Sorry to bring this back to life but CT is illegal for any type of tail light modification. I've had every car tails i've owned tinted and never had a problem with 5.0. As long as you can clearly see the lights during the day you shouldn't have any issues.

Re: (FrenchGs60)

I see these more and more every single day on my way to work, I've seen mustangs, chargers, camaros, neons, avengers, wrxs, lancers, elcipses, civics, accords, f150s, cobalts, scionss, etc.... and they all look cheap. Only saw one nice acura and a BMW that looked good with tinted tails. I think this is the new trend in the car scene.
I've noticed the cops are starting to pull these guys over left and right now. The State troopers in NJ are pretty tolerant but I can see there point, blacked out lenses don't let adequate light through the tails and they don't reflect at night. I have seen two cars this week pulled over with blacked tails during the day time, I think work is out and they are on the lookout for this in my area.
I am still considering having Jonstintedtails do mine in 15% but this looks virtually stock compared to what I see on the roads around here.
