a few questions for the well-informed:
1. turbos aside, how similar are the mechanicals/block/internals of our t5 engine to the r engine? i'm sure this has been asked before, but i couldn't turn up any info on a search.
2. assuming a turbo swap or modification, what is the reasonable power limit of an unmodified engine? by reasonable, i mean the amount of power that the engine could handle as a daily driver + some occassional track days/street fight + some weekend twisty country road flying. does 375hp sound dangerous? keep in mind i am not asking about the clutch, just the engine itself.
3. assuming a turbo swap, how can we get past 300hp w/o sacrificing the excellent street drivability of the t5? case in point: evo mr makes peak torque @ 3500rpm vs t5 @ 1500rpm. obviously a "bigger" turbo that takes longer to get going? if i want over 300hp, i don't want to wait until 3500rpm for peak torque. how about this: what if somebody smart like heico or evolve developed a setup that utilized two stock turbos? if the engine can handle it, and if it is physically possible to fit/modify, wouldn't a twin-turbo setup give the best of both worlds: low-end torque and over 300hp?
i'm no engineer or anything, i just wanted to throw this idea out to those more informed than i am. i am having a lot of fun w/ my t5, but I WANT MORE. i really DON'T want to trade it for an evo or sti, but i am tired of watching those guys drive by me unoppossed. (what is it w/ sw fl? everbody and their mother has an evo or sti down here!) bsr stage 3 is awesome, but if i had an evo mr, $775 for a vishnu reprogrammed ecu gets a claimed 380hp! probably a toasty clutch, too, but oh well. get another.
ok, wise volvo sages, have at it w/ the discussion.

Re: big power t5 (mmb.net99)

LP turbo spools fast, meaning more fun and if driven well better MPG. You WILL lose spool by going to a bigger of modified turbo. You will may lose MPG too depending on how you drive. The limit of the stock turbo is about 260 HP or so. The Focus ST guy are seeing a little more with intercooler, but IMO turbo life starts falling quickly after 260 HP and yes a large intercooler does make the turbo work harder and can lead to more lag. No free lunch, never will be.
R blocks start to fail in all areas above 400 HP. The thicker walled 2.4 block would be useful to go higher. The R has stronger rods, IMO this is not a huge issue. So say since this is about the same overall engine, 330 to 370 HP would seem to be about where "reasonable limit" would be.
I would assume most people would just do chip, downpipe, intake and exhuast and be done with it.
Next step would be mod stock turbo with or without some for of better cooling of charge to 300 HP
next step is new turbo and with intercooling and maybe injectors etc to 330 HP.
After this IMO, I would do R rods and pistons, Port and polish the head and R spec cams to 370 HP. I guess somewhere along the way you would need a Greddy EManage and a external boost controler

I believe there are quite a few posts on this topic if you dig a bit.
