Beta / Test version of new FAQ thread

Guys:

In response to the kvetching and multiple threads on a more useful site, I am resurrecting something that I started two years ago but it never fully got off the ground.

What I wanted to start was a Quasi Wiki. Once I took over moderating the R forum I realized that what Jim Lill told me was absolutely true: to set up a true FAQ thread took MASSIVE amounts of time. Time I simply do not have. I was looking for a way for members to be able to help and put this idea together.

The idea is to have each of the topics in the thread linked to one thread which is an open thread containing more links to various threads on that topic. I know that sounds confusing, but think of it as a "pre-done" search. So if you want to know about angle gear issues, you click the angle gear link in the FAQ thread. This will link you to a master Angle Gear thread which contains NOTHING but links to popular angle gear topics.

The beauty of this is that as more angle gear threads are started, each member can update the master Angle Gear thread with a link to that topic.

For a demonstration, click on the Rain Squeal link, which is live.

For this to work, ALL must participate. Please do not post ANYTHING in the master threads except for links to other threads. Those threads are NOT the area for discussion.

Let me know what you all think. I have quoted my original post below.

To all Swedespeed Members:

Welcome to the new and improved Master Launch Thread. Over the coming weeks, I will be transitioning from the old Quick Launch Thread to the new Master Launch Thread format. As time goes on, you will see more of the links becoming active.

The goal in designing this thread was in response to all of your comments regarding lack of search power on SS, and a better way to find commonly asked information. In response to this, I have created this Master Information Launch Thread.

Some of the links in this thread are "simple" links, meaning they will bring you directly to a site or thread. Other will be what I am calling "Jump" threads. This means that some of the links on this page will take you to a locked thread containing several links on the subject. You will see these "Jump" threads being created here and there. If you see a thread and would like to add something to it, please let me know via IM.

It is with these that I still need your help. I am compiling links for all the threads noted below. And there are hundreds of threads to compile. If you would like to help, please shoot me an IM and I will give you a topic or topics to research. The jump threads will be updated by the mods over time as new topics are found or created.

I hope that this thread makes the R Forum, and SS overall, a much more informative place to be.

When we find a thread that covers one of the categories, do you want us to just provide you think link, and you will update the FAQ?

Also, considering many of the threads go off topic, what about a quality post in a thread that is not on the topic of the thread, but is relevant to a topic in the thread?

I will set up the "jump" threads as I call them. When I have time in the next couple of weeks, I will make each of the threads in that link live.

Most of them will have no information other than "Rain squeal jump thread".

It will be up to the users on the forum to add posts with links that are relevant. You the users will ultimately decide which are topics worthy of being linked there.

I only ask two things:

1) The jump thread be used to ONLY POST LINKS. DO NOT DISCUSS THE TOPIC THERE.
2) When you post a link, do not post the URL and have it automatically convert to a link. Please take the time to describe the link. In case you don't know how to do that, you do it as such:

Most of the time people just post links by pasting in the url to the thread and letting the forum software auto convert. It then ends up looking like this:

http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=115292

Instead, you should do it this way, substituting brackets [ where braces { are shown:

{url=http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=115292}End Link Replacement DIY{/url}

You then end up with a link that looks like this:

End Link Replacement DIY

Very nice!

Has anyone ever done thread with all the module and sensor acronyms?
Or at least most of them. It seems it would help the layman at least know what sensor or module someone is referring to when they say the SRM or SAS or DIM or AEM and AUM or is it a Boost Sensor or is it really a MAP sensor?

I could use some of my Training Material to try and put together a master list of what Volvo actually refers to these items are if you think this would be good info. It might take awhile as my 13 month old keeps me running around

A handful of thought/recommendation/requests:

1) I noticed that a lot of your links-to-be were phrased in a very newbie friendly way -- i.e. "What is the TCV?" / "I have no Blow-off valve? What do I have?!?!".

Based on the number of startled and subsequently flamed newcomers who didn't know that the "horrible shrieking noise under my butt" was thermal deflection of the center resonator causing it to contact the propeller shaft AKA "Rain Squeal", I think it's important to expand the "What is "Rain Squeal"?" item along the same lines.. something to the effect of "What is "Rain Squeal" / that horrible shrieking noise from under the center of my car?". I've seen a number of "OMG what's this?" / "Rain Squeal, noob. lrn2search!!!!" / "How the hell was I supposed to know what it was called?" threads lately, and I think that simple expansion would help alarmed newcomers find the information they need.

2) Might be good to include a link to IPD's info on the Magnuson-Moss act from at http://www.ipdusa.com/Will-add...log-1 under the "What is Volvo's stance on aftermarket parts?" section.

3) Given how big of a topic it is, I think a "Headlights & High beams" section would fit in well with your Transmission / Brakes / Audio categories.

4) Perhaps we should add a "Before you buy an R..." item to your "Don't drive a mile" group?

These are all meant as helpful suggestions -- I think this is a fantastic idea.

This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
