Which was the most beautiful P1800? Was it the traditional coupe or the ES wagon/coupe hybrid?
P1800 Coupe

P1800 ES

Re: Best P1800 Design Poll ([email protected])

The P1800 is MUCH better than the 1800ES, but what about the 1800S/E? Slightly different from the P1800. All I know of is the front bumper, but I'm sure there's more to seperate the Jensen body P1800 from the Swedish built 1800S and later 1800E.

Re: Best P1800 Design Poll ([email protected])

The coupe is striking, and definitely more beautiful, but I almost voted for the ES... Something in me likes the "underdog" factor. The ES is kind of homely, but in a cute, compelling kind of way... The ES is the one with the puppy-dog eyes, the one you'd want to take home with you at the end of the day.
P.S. Anybody else like the juxtaposition of the ES in the foreground and the XC90 in the background?! Both sporting their glassy green-houses and their strong Volvo "shoulders"... Neat...

I voted for the wagon, dunno why? I am always a coupe kinda guy... or so I thought. The ES is a little tougher looking to me. Both are gorgious though!

Re: Best P1800 Design Poll (Spearzy)

Am I the only person who thinks the 1800ES looks faster and less goofy?
Since the roofline doesn't curve down in the back, it looks lower and sleeker. The coupe looks kind of stubby.
I think the ES was one of the influences of the design for the BMW //M coupe. A little silly looking maybe, but that's what makes it distinctive.
But then, I'm biased...
Re: Best P1800 Design Poll (asthenia)

Do you have a picture or two of your ES that you'd like to share? I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would love to see it! Do share... Call me fickle, but I'm wishin' I could change my vote now. The ES is TOTALLY growing on me. P.S. Yes, I see the design for the BMW //M coupe a little bit...now that you pointed it out.

Re: Best P1800 Design Poll (Lisa62)

The only pictures I have right now are the ones from the eBay auction I bought the car on. You can see them here... http://www.8sparks.com/1800ES
I just took her out for an 'Italian tune-up' on the weekend, and finished off a roll of film in the country with the fall colours, so I should have those developed and scanned soon.
I'm always open to seeing pictures of other people's cars. There's a site called http://www.volvo1800pictures.com that's always open to submitted pics.
Re: Best P1800 Design Poll (asthenia)

Nice pics, asthenia, even if you didn't take them! I like the yellow color far better than all those red and off-white ones in that 1800 forum you posted up above. It's got ten times the personality, somehow!!!
Oh, and like Spearzy said, WELCOME to Swedespeed, Turbo16psi and asthenia! (Where are my manners?! Ha ha.) Glad to have some 1800 enthusiasts here. Those of us who only know a little bit about Volvos (and only the newer ones, at that) can certainly benefit from a little "schooling" on the vintage models!!!
Now, here's my stupid-question-for-the-day. Please don't laugh.
What makes a P1800 a "P", not just an 1800? I think I figured out the E and S. I presume that the S is a sedan, the ES an "estate" sedan (which is what most Europeans call their station wagons)...right?! I'm curious.

Re: Best P1800 Design Poll (Lisa62)

Actually, I've found it's also referred to as an 1800 in certain older archived press releases we added to our news archive. I'm not sure which ones get the P or which ones don't.

Re: Best P1800 Design Poll (Lisa62)

Thanks for the welcome. You'll probably be seeing a lot of me.
The P1800 was the original model, when Volvo didn't have the facilities to assemble the cars themselves. It was done by a British shop called Jensen, which I understand was a little sub-par in build quality.
When Volvo moved all the manufacturing in-house, they called it the 1800S (for Sweden?). Then when they introduced the fuel injected engine, they called it the 1800E, and finally the 1800ES wagon (my favorite.)
I'm hoping they start making the safety concept car they've been showing off. It looks like the closest thing to an ES that anybody's made in 30 years. And maybe they could make an R version... I'd sell a kidney for one of those.
Here's a source of info on the 1800 model. The entire Volvo Club UK site is filled with great information.
http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/pro_1800.htm
