My '04 V70R was my first Volvo. I bought it because it was a wagon, all wheel drive, manual, and 300 hp. Not because it was safe, or Sweedish, or a Volvo. I have 80,000 miles and my warranty goes to 100,000. I would like to replace it before the warranty runs out. I am also thinking I don't want to get the first year of a new car again, leaning more towards getting the second year to let them get the bugs out. That said, we think we know the new V70 will be here in MY08. This will more than likely have the new 6 cylinder. When do you think the next R will be here? Also, considering the mindset of Volvo right now do you think there will even be another R? olcv

Re: Best guess at next R (JRL)

I think this will spawn a HCC then a production model before we see a new R...
http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7004080406

Re: Best guess at next R (kenschel)

Sorry, I meant to write that the new version of the V70 will be here in
MY 2008. My finger threw the "R" in there out of habit. I have edited and it should make more sense now. Oclv

Re: Best guess at next R (JRL)

I read in M/T that there might be a S80 that will be a 6 cyclinder turbo, that would probably be the new "R". I hope not it's too big IMO obviously;however, that 6cyclinder turbo in a smaller AWD Volvo with the seats from my "R" would be the hot setup and could be very competitive with an IPD setup.

Modified by cloaked at 7:57 PM 8-13-2006

Trying to plan your car-purchasing decisions on what you think may happen (with any car company) will drive you nuts. Nothing is for sure until the cars are on the dealer's lots. The best thing to do is decide when you want to replace your car, then look at what's available at that time. My best guess (since you asked) is that the next VR is going to be at least three years away, and I would also guess it will not have a real manual transmission available when and if it does arrive.

Peugeot was supposed to return in 1999 or 2000 (can't remember) and I'm still waiting with no sign of any return to the US. Alfa also made big announcements many years ago and supposedly it will really be happening in the next year or so. We'll have to wait longer for the sedans, though, assuming they stick around this time.
- Tryg

Yes, but I heard they're actually slower than the 2-pedal cars!
(This 3-pedal thing is getting to be a lost cause!)

Re: Best guess at next R (oclv)

Doubtful to see another R for some time. It seems to have been more of a problem for Volvo than anything else. Too many issues, not enough market, too many discounts to seem feasible at this point.

Re: Best guess at next R (cloaked)

In line 6, engine facing front wards not sideways, cross drilled (possibly slotted) rotors, lowered, twin turbo (to reduce turbo lag). SMG transmission. Ummmm.... Weight reduction, 18" Wheels standard, with 14" rotors, improved interior.

Volvo's track record favors transverse mount for crashworthiness. I seriously doubt that it would abandon that in hopes of a few performance buyers.
