Since my VR is in the shop for angle gear replacement, should I replace the battery as preventive maintenance , even though there are no problems and it works perfectly? Dealer says NO, and that I should wait for symptoms like slow start cranking before spending any money.

Mine is 6 years, two months and 42K. Works great. I asked my indie the same question and he said, it is fine, keep it.

6-7 years is usually when they kick the bucket .
at 6 years I would just due to the finkyness of the newer volvos electircal systems.
Optima FTW Redtop

Re: (JAS)

Wrong. Strong voltage is very important on this car. All sorts of strang occurrances have come about from bad batteries.

Would it shock you more to know that my battery is almost 9 years old? Miles driven, times cranked may have something to do with it.

You are on borrowed time. If you keep your car ungaraged, I'd replace it right now - summer heat reduces its lifetime. If garaged, then you probably have another year+ of life. Cheap enough to replace now before the winter sets in and leaves you stranded because you were too cheap now to replace trying to get that last 5% out of it.

What is this "winter" you're talking about?
