If you haven't read petew's post in the 6sp MT topic, it's a good read. It did raise this question for me...Where is the battery in the V70R? He mentions, all too breifly, the battery is in the trunk of the S60R, and the question to the Volvo rep yeilded no answer as to the V's battery. It may be a secret.

The owners manual for a V70 says:

"The battery in your car is located under the floor of the cargo area"
Correct!

All P2 cars (S60s, V70s, XC70s, XC90s and S80s) have their batteries located inside the spare tire area (well, the XC90s spare tire is hangind on the outside but you get my drift).

Re: Battery Location (GrecianVolvo)

In the cargo area to put the chassie into a more 50/50 front-to-rear weight ratio.

Re: Battery Location (Volvo Grrrr)

Yeah, the battery is in the trunk/cargo area, but I doubt it does any thing to help with 50/50 weight distro.! it's only about 15-20 lbs!!! It's probably for more technical reasons and maybe even a safety reason too. A friend of mine had his 93 525i battery under his back seat. Note guys: there is a + terminal in the engine compartment for jump-starts if need be.
Now how about that S60 spoiler!! It's barely noticable and it must be really high tech to actually increase d/f by some 20-30%(??) according to Volvo. BTW, I'm heading to the NY auto show in a couple hours and will post any interesting tibits later or tomorrow!!! HAPPY EASTER / PASSOVER !!!

Every "little" pound helps but you are right; the main reason has to do with the layout of the engine bay in order to bring the cabin forward to create more room inside the cabin and maximize the trunk capacity, as a result.

Re: Battery Location (Turbome)

another advantage is that the battery isn't subjected to the high underhood temperatures. A downside is acid in your trunk although the high temps make it less of an issue. If worried about the acid issue, buy an Optima

Update:

Volvo uses a group 48 battery which is 11L x 6.75W X 7.437H and is rated at 110 cranking minutes

Optimia does NOT makes a direct drop in. Their group 34 is 10X6.8X7.8, slightly taller and has a few less Cranking minutes, 106. It is FULLY SEALED, street price $135

Re: Battery Location (JimLill)

Well, for the 50/50 weight, I was told this by a Volvo guy at Shea Stadium. Most batteries are pretty darn heavy and not just 10/15 lbs. More like 30-45lbs.

Optima batterires are great! I have a Yellow top custom mounted in my Passat. The stock size the Passat uses is a group 48 as well. I have the Optima Yellow Top, D34/78 group 34. More info here. Note: it is an Adobe Acrobat file.

Works great without any issues. You will probably need to get it custom mounted/wired but it's worth it.

Here it is in my engine bay with a custom bracket and custom wiring:
