Battery Location

Forgive my ignorance, but as a relative newbie to the Volvo world, I'm not sure why the battery is located in the back of the car. (I was too excited to ask questions at the dealership, and haven't thought about it since until my wife had to help someone jump their car today.) I've searched the site but can't seem to find this topic posted anywhere. Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance.
Chad.

Like Johann said, it has to do with:

1. Packaging issues and reasons
2. Better, more stable trunk environment
3. Helps improve weight distribution

The only downside to this is that if you are in an accident and the firemen don't take the time to look in the trunk, they just start cutting wires under the hood to disable your car. This makes repairs much more expensive than they would otherwise be.
Carl,

I read your post about your accident-- along with everyone else I'm sorry to hear about it but glad that you were not seriously hurt. We drive a Volvo now because of a serious accident that permenantly injured my wife. I see posts like yours and it's reasurring to know that we made the right decision! Have you received any word on the $$$ damage to your car?
My insurance company finally got around to adjusting my car and it will have to be repaired.

The autobody shop that is fixing it has assured me that there is no frame damage to the car, but the front suspension will have to be replaced. I am waiting for the check to be mailed to me to find out what the preliminary total is. The car doesn't look too bad considering the hit it took. Thumbs up for the tank-like build of the S60.
