I have had my S60R (2005) now for about 18 months and I must say I had a few repairs done on it, most on warranty. One of the problem, is that the dealer was never able to resolve, is that he car generates a bad smell everytime I accelerate, it doesn't even have to be brisk acceleration, simply if I try to pass another car. 4 visits later and still the same problem.
Visit 1 : Air filter and cabin filter. Not covered by Warranty $
Visit 2 : Spark Plugs. Not covered by Warranty $$
Visit 3: They check coil packs and no need to change.
Visit 4 : They want to change the catalyser.$$$$
The only problem is by the time they got to visit 4, my warranty was out and they said that there is nothing they can do, I have to pay.
As you can see, I'm not too thrilled about their expertise and existing situation , most of my issues were addressed 3 or 4 time before getting a resolution. As an example, they changed my gas cap 4 time as I would get the fuel filler cap loose error every so often, sad to say I still do.
I was hoping someone in this forum has heard of such an issue of bad smell upon acceleration and can brief me in on it. At this pace the dealer is on a trial and error basis and I don't necessarily want to give him all my money to test.
Many Thanks.

Re: Bad Smell upon acceleration (PHX13)

what exactly does it smell like? Is it in the vehicle or outside, and if outside, how do you smell it when you're moving?
Just curious.

If it's a rotten egg type smell it's the catalytic converter. That should be covered either under warranty or the federal emissions laws.

Catalysts have a longer warranty than the standard 4/50 bumper to bumper warranty. Not sure how it is in Canada.

Re: Bad Smell upon acceleration (PHX13)

Actually both garages I checked with said it smelled like the car was running rich. The smell is bad but not the same as rotten eggs or gas leaks you would smell from a gas oven. They apparently can see it by connecting the car to their computer unit if the car was running rich and they said that mixture was fine. I'll check into the warranty, in case it does run longer and post the reply I get from Volvo Canada.
Thanks !

Ate too many bean burritos from Taco Bell, and the pressure from acceleration presses on the stomach releasing some of those o - so - smelly odors?
I hear you get that smell from the cat converter. So +1 on that?

Re: (vivek9856)

Thank you for the Burrito Bean Theory, unfortunately we do not have Taco Bell in all Canadian cities only Toronto. Asfor the catalytic the dealer agreed to change the whole line muffler in and all.
Thanks.

Re: (PHX13)

I'd also check all firewall seals in the footwell area of the car - particularly the steering wheel shaft seal. If one of them is loose, engine smells (and sound) enter the cabin...

If it smells like the inside of your over the engine pipe, I've had that problem before on a 9 series where a check valve on the vacuum system was bad. It would blow into the interior vent controls which are sealed for vacuum but not for pressure, and leak into the interior vents under boost.
Do the P2 cars use vacuum to actuate the vents still? If so, you might want to inspect your check valve(s) off the intake.

Thanks everyone for the replies, after a few weeks of trying to convince the dealer to change my catalyser. They finally agreed to change it and sure enough the problem is resolved. The dealer said it was the first time that they had heard of it and surprised. Anyhow I tild them to consult Swedespeed once in a while. I sure enough wont hurt them. Thanks again !!

Hello Guys, Ive got the same problem right now, I have Volvo S80 2006. and there was a bad smell always upon accelerating specially that I have twin turbo, at the beginning the smell was to the minimum , but now its not tolerated at all. I even open the window directly from the bad odor

I went to the volvo service center, here in Saudi Arabia (Jeddah branch) and they informed me that there is a sealed opening under the steering wheel, where the rubber seal is loose and while speeding the smell came from the motor inside the compartment ??? They tighten it and told me its solved ??

I went back home, with a high speed to try it ?? and the smell is reduced but still u can smell it :( and my car now smell really bad :S

I book an appointment with them for tomorrow to complain about the same problem, I will advice them to check the Cat. , but what i have doubts around is the Spark Plugs ? I think they need to be changed, but does the smell could be from them ???

and please tell us how is ur car after all these years , the post is since 2009 ?????????

Welcome to the SS Forum !!! As for the smell you are experiencing, does it smell like eggs, rotten eggs, sulfur ??? If so then more than likely it is your catalytic converter that is going bad. Let us know so we can help. God Bless :)

No it is NOT THE CAT!! I spent $800 on IPD's DP hoping to fix the same issue and absolutely no fix. Your car and anyone else with the issue is running rich, and thats normal! Its better and safer to be running rich with heavy boost fluctuations then to run lean. Just part of owning the car is all
