Thurs eveningI was going down to Stockton CA from Tahoe for a weekend skeet tournament. I got the "chasis setting service required" or something like that message. The car seemed to default to sport mode. No big deal, I figured I would get it checked out when I got back. Checked into the hotel Thurs night. Came out from registering and went to back out of the parking space. Car wouldn't go into reverse. Was stuck in first. Shifter just went from the first to the second position, but never came out of first. Couldn't get it to go to the righ side of the shft gate at all. Located the Stockton Volvo dealer and drove the car over early in the morning because Tripple A said it would be an hour and a half to two hours and I was shooting my first event at 11:00 am. They couldn't look at it until late in the afternoon on Friday and couldn't really figure out what was wrong, except that the cables came out of wherever they fasten in. They didn't have time to figure out why. So I got a mercedes rental and drove home sunday afternoon. The R has been running great and its a bummer that this had to happen so far from home. oclv

Didn't they just change the clutch and cables?

Re: Bad day for my R (JRL)

I had a new clutch installed a couple months ago. I don't know if the cables were replaced. Perhaps there is an issue with how things got put back together.....................oclv

After my cables were replaced, I drove home and lost the shifter on the way down the off-ramp to get to my house. Limped home and called for tow truck. They safety wired my cables down so they would not come off again. Still a bummer, and had to get it re-aligned after the tow truck messed it up my alignment.
- Polartek

I went in complaining about the buzzing shifter and overly tough problems in changing gears and ended up with a new set of cables that weren't fastened in correctly. Luckily it happened close to home so waiting for the tow at 2 in the morning wasn't so bad.

Re: Bad day for my R (EnterTheR)

I had the cables replaced when the car was new, to fix the initial buzz that was common on the R's. Perhaps JRL was on to something and it was a result of the new clutch being installed. I have a Mercedes 230 sport as a rental. I can't see why they call it sport. What a dog. oclv

Doesn't that make it a sports car?
Good luck, hope your car is back on the road soon. Seems like they must have messed something up when re-connecting your shifter cables.

Sorry to hear that! I bet that JRL is onto something also, since the cables would have been removed to change your clutch. But I dont know why that would make the chassis service light come on. Hopefully you get your car back in a timely manner!

The cables are often not (re)installed correctly, the sheath pops out. I don't have time this morning to search but there is a thread with pix somewhere on here where it happens. Fixing can be DIY on the road in a pinch.

Re: Bad day for my R (JimLill)

Jim, thanks. Unfortunately the photos wouldn't show up on my computer. The tech mentioned yesterday that there were two retaining clips on the cables missing. This could be the problem with the shifter. On the chasis settings message, they have run all the codes and diagnosis. When they got done, nothing showed up. They were instructed that if nothing showed up, to replace the chasis control unit. Hopefully I will have the car back wendesday night. Thanks for all the feedback. oclv
