This weekend, in the rain, with a full car, I put my camera bag in the trunk of my '05 S60R MT and used the grocery bag holder to keep the camera from bouncing around. When I went into reverse the backup warning began to chirp like a cell phone ringing. Groceries don’t do it. Any idea why it happened (several times and every time I was in reverse)? By the way, being able to disable the system is a very nice feature when it malfunctions.

Did you pass by anything to the SIDE?
The monitored zone pans out to the side for a few feet.
Mine goes off every time I back out of our garage, just as the vehicle rear passes within a foot of the open doorway.
I've yet to experience a malfunction with it.

It is the rain/water droplets. I have had this exact thing happening on my V70R also backing out in the rain (or after a rain). Apparently this happens when there is/are water droplets right in front of the sensor/s. Put a good coat of wax on the bumper surface (especially those sensors painted surface) so that water droplets will not stick to the vertical surface.

Thanks to all who replied. No kid or dog, no incline and the camera and bag are not magical. I suppose that it may be the old "post hoc ergo proctor hoc" thing, you know, one thing happens followed by another and the normal conclusion is that they are casually related. However, I have backed up in the rain before without this happening, and living in the Boston area, there has been plenty of rain to test it on recently. I think I will put the bag w/camera back in the trunk and see if it happens again without the rain. I haven't taken the time to try to find out how the sensor works-but there has to be some form of energy that is being detected and, if its being generated by the car with the sensor detecting the return, what came to mind was a leak. The camera has a metal alloy, perhaps titanium, body which certainly would have the ability to reflect most verities of energy. However, all that being said, I think I pointed out that this was not a big deal as the alarm was easily silenced. I will let you all know what happens when I put the bag back in.

As already stated, it was from the rain. I have had the same thing happen sitting in my driveway. igot out and wiped them off and it stopped making noise. Whena drop of water sits on the sensor it pretty much acts as a magnifier and will make even a spec of dirt set the buzzer off.

I am sure that you are right although I thought that it began before the car got into the rain backing out of the garage (a totally different warning than one gets when it detects something to the side) but I may have just not realized that the rear end of the car was already in the rain.
