Was following this thread...
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=119570
Reminded me that ever since I had my Angle Gear replaced earlier this year (about 4 months ago), I hear a muted "tock!" sound when engaging 1st and 2nd gear (sometimes makes the sound with clutch pedal pushed in, but most of the time makes the sound when clutch pedal is in process of being released)
In 2004, I had the axle ping problem, had it fixed with loctite, and was fine until now. However, I seem to recall the axle ping sound I had in 2004 was more of a "click" than a "tock". I've already replaced my lower tranny mount with a new OEM, so that's not it.
I also seem to recall that when replacing the angle gear, I think the dealer has to remove at least one of the front hub/axle assemblies, no? If so, wonder if this caused the loctited axle bolts to require re-loctiting (if so, i'll just order the XC90 bolts).
But before I assume this is the issue, has any one that's replaced an angle gear had a similar situation?

Re: Axle Ping returns after Angle Gear replacement? (icebiker)

I think you are hearing a different noise. My clutch makes a little bit of noise when I'm inching along (like a drive through). The axle ping noise occured when going on/off throttle.

The passenger side axle has to come out to remove the angle gear and that's why the ping is back.
XC90 bolts FTW.

Re: Axle Ping returns after Angle Gear replacement? (I Roll)

Thanks all. If the axle bolts are as simple and inexpensive a fix, I'll try that first. Will search for a how to on SS unless someone has a link handy.

Quote, originally posted by I Roll »

I think you are hearing a different noise. You also can't really hear it outside the cabin with the windows rolled down...it's so slight that it can only be heard from within the car. The strange thing is that it wasn't there before the Angle gear was replaced.
Is there anything about the angle gear that has has an effect on the clutch or vice versa? I thought the angle gear only sent power to the rears when Haldex called for it (which wouldn't be the case when using the clutch to engage first gear from a standstill).

It's the axle. Here's a good link.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/z...age=2

On my MT it is caused (especially between shifts from 1st to 2nd) when engaging the clutch while the throttle is still under a slight load. Try concentrating and overexagerating that friction point between no throttle and clutch to shift and see if you can get it to go away. Once you have that down, you can speed up your shift transitions to get it going smoothly. It's almost like you have to delay pushing the clutch in until all throttle pressure is off. While this can happen very fast, I think it's one of those idiosyncracys of this car and the clutch.

However, up until my angle gear replacement, I never had the issue, after 50K+ miles of driving to boot. Only thing that's changed as a result of the new AG (other than the AG itself) is that the axle/hub assembly had to be removed. It does puzzle me that the sound itself is different that what I recall my axle ping sounded like back in '04, but I figure I'll try the bolts first (easy fix it would appear), and if that fails, start looking for other answers. Thanks again.

Yes, let us know how you solve it. I may have something else to chase as well - but I know it is not axle ping on mine.
