Hi All,
So I think I am going to be one of the many who have had the bevel gear failure (or whatever it is called). The other day I noticed that there was a little bit of oil on the rear end, underneath the car. It looked like the gear was starting to seep a little. Today I walked out and sure enough there is a tiny drip spot underneath the car in the same spot. I don't know what else could be leaking oil back there so I am assuming its the bevel gear.
My VR is a CPO, so I am guessing this is something Volvo will pay for...is this something that I am going to have to fight to get covered under the CPO warranty or will they cover it without a peep? I have had the car for less than a year and am planning on taking it to OC Volvo where I bought it(even though they were the biggest jerks ever when I bought the car).
I'm primarily concerned with:
1.) Will the CPO cover it?
and
2.) How long do I have 'till it completely goes? I am going to get it in right away, but I have to drive it today and I don't want to blow up the gears back there.
Thanks in advance!

Re: AWD/Bevel Gear Failure?? (so_calR)

The angle gear/bevel gear combination is in the front, attached to the transaxle. If you're leak is on the rear diff, maybe just a bad seal?
I'm not an expert though, but if it's in the rear, its not the angle gear.

Re: AWD/Bevel Gear Failure?? (Rues R)

Correct, the items in the rear are the rear diff and the haldex.
BTW, a leaking angle gear does NOT indicated failure.

The problem here is if your leak really is at the REAR of the car,
that is not where the angle gear is!

Thanks for the replies, I'm very glad to hear its not the angle gear!! Car's going in anyways because the park assist is out so I'll just be adding it to the list. Thanks again!

Re: (so_calR)

Good Morning. Hoping I can tag along in this thread...
My R is right now in the shop awaiting bevel gear box seals. I don't know how much this procedure costs, but my AAA/Prizm extended warranty is threatening to not cover it. The box is definitely leaking. How could this be at all questioned by the warranty? I mean its drive-train. They are thus sending an inspector out. Car is at Boston Volvo who is hardly a novice at this game. Their word should be gold.
