So, I lost AWD on the R about 2 weeks ago. Diagnosed as a faulty control module. So, they ordered it, and went to put the new one in, but (according to them)...
The old one was mounted with cross-threaded bolts at the factory, one (or more) heads broke off, and they could not "get an edge" to remove the bolts, and now they are having to order a whole AWD unit.
Does the control module really bolt directly on to the AWD unit?
Is there anyway to remove a bunch of cross-threaded bolts for less expense than for them to order an entire new AWD unit? (like drill and tap it??)
Is my dealership making up a ridiculous story to cover up the fact they completely misdiagnosed the problem, and have been sitting on the car for a week waiting for the wrong parts?? (I know that may seem ridiculous, but this is the same dealership that told me a steering wheel coming off was an "adjustment" not covered under warranty, and that I would need to pay for it). I think they know if they screw up another repair on my car, I will be escalating the poop out of the issue.
To make me even more suspicious - my dealership NEVER has their 1 of their 2 loaner cars (yes, the cheap bastards only have 2 loaners, and they do not run a shuttle more than about 15 miles from the dealership) available for me (I did not buy the car from them), but they committed to having one BEFORE I even asked. (In fact, thats how they called to tell me - "Hey, we wanted to let you know when your loaner will be available to pick up, because your car will not be ready...)
So, are they full of crap? Does this sound believable??

Yes, the control module is part of the AWD unit. It's located behind a silver nubbed-surface cover on the left side, just ahead of the rear differential.
You really want them drilling and ez-out'ing some fasteners? The way it appears, even if they did the damage in the first place, they're making it right. Let us know how it comes out.
Tom.

If it's a warranty issue, I wouldn't worry about why they're doing it, just take the new AWD unit. If you have to pay for it, that's a different story.

Re: AWD Advice - I don't trust my dealer (Mk1Racer)

OK
1) It's under warranty, so I am not worried about the cost
2) If that is what happened, than absolutely I want a new one
However, the reason I asked was that the whole thing seemed weird - it's a long story, but my I have had problems with them in the past, and they don't admit their mistakes well. I am not going to go on about their specific behaviors on this incident, but let's just say I was expecting problems almost from the beginning. As I said before, I am having more and more issues with them, and I was suspicious they did not want to admit they were wrong.
Thanks for the advice.
Jeff

If they don't admit their mistakes, how do you know they made any?

Re: AWD Advice - I don't trust my dealer (vLGrok)

First off, I said they don't admit them well - as in, I call them out on something, and it's like, hmm, welll....For example, they WILL not put Mobil 1 in for me. That's not what Volvo authorizes, "dealers aren't supposed to do that." I was like well, I know other people that do - "Don't belive everything you read on the Internet."
The most recent example is when my steering wheel was loose, the service writer told me it was an adjustment that I had to pay for, not a warranty repair. I was like "The steering wheel is coming loose...that's an adjustment??" I was insistently told that VCNA does not cover that - I had to pay labor.
So, I asked the Service Manager to put that in writing, he immediately changed his tune - that I must have misunderstood. After 5-10 minutes of saying "You're kidding me - that's not warranteed? What if my wheel falls off? Seriously - an adjustment?" I am pretty sure I did not misunderstand.
I have had a few issues with them like this. They kind of hem and haw if you catch them on a problem.

My dealership is the same way. I am going to drive an exrta 40 miles one way to go to the other dealer here in Minnesota. If you have had this "vibe" more than once, [email protected] can them! They do not deserve your business!

What Mash said. Why are you still taking your car back to them if you've had problems w/ them in the past?

If he is new to the Volvo "thing" that is why he has giving them so many chances. I am sure he was hoping for improvement since day 1.

Re: AWD Advice - I don't trust my dealer (Mash)

The next closest one is 75 miles away. I know 2 people who drive over 100 miles to come to my local dealer, because the other one is even worse!!! 3rd choice is 300 miles away. So, my choices are pretty limited. They are probably the biggest reason why I regret buying a Volvo - they are the ONLY service option in the state.

Lots of us MN-ers have finally convinced him to ditch the bumblefcuks at Kline. I've never had anything but great service at Borton!

I think the service at Borton is unbeatable. If they are near you, you should strike a deal with them. I'm on #3 from them right now....
JR
