I haven't found any posts about this yet so if there are any forgive me please! On average, how much oil is everyone going through and how many miles are on your R's?
On average, I am going through about 1/2 quart every thousand or so mile. And that is using conventional oil, I will be switching to full synth in about 1000 miles and see if it improves.

You can't compare a high pressure turbocharged engine's oil consumption to "normal".
the most important thing is to check it often, and use a full synthetic, and obey the "warm-up" and "cool-down" laws set down in the warranty/service owner's manual suppliment.
I strongly recommend you do your own oil / filter changes.
In ancient China... you paid your doctor while you were well.... and stoped paying him when you were sick. If you died -- your doctor was thrown on the funeral pire. Doctors were strongly motivated to see that you remained healthy.
In America... your dealer mechanic gets paid more as your car gets worse. If your car becomes too ill to depend upon ... the dealer gets to sell you a new model.
See a problem here ?
not kidding.
cars aren't that hard to maintain yourself .... thanks to places like SS

Re: Average oil consumption? (Overun73)

47K and I only had to add 1/2 qt the first 1K; haven't had to add any since. Although I get my oil changed every 3-4K. Right now I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic.

Re: (MagoonR)

Winter months haven't had to add any oil. I use AMSOIL 0w30 Synthetic; 82,*** miles....I check my oil once a week. When I first switched to synthetic; the first few changes it seemed like I had to top it off about a 1/2 a quart during the 6,000 miles but the last 3 changes I have gone the full 6,000 miles between changes without needing to top off. Maybe I drive like a granny; non-boost....

Re: (vlvman)

Ok, so since in the Mob mentality, I have concrete shoes, I should expect to use more oil than my grandma, right? And as for synthetic, I will be switching over in 1000 miles or so and the only thing I let the dealer do is warranty work, like a boost/check engine light that came on. They found a leak in the inter-cooler line and replaced it before I had even put 50 miles on the loaner they gave me. But I do tend to agree that dealer AREN'T necessarily going to do the right thing.

Re: (adykes)

Never had to add oil in my '05 (28K miles or so when it was totalled) or my wife's '06 (43K miles now).

The owners manual says:

Engine oil must meet the minimum ILSAC specification GF-3, API SL, or ACEA A1/B1. Lower quality oils may not offer the same fuel economy, engine performance, or engine protection.
Volvo Cars recommends Castrol.
Depending on your driving habits, premium or synthetic oils may provide superior fuel economy and engine protection. Consult your Volvo retailer for recommendations on premium or synthetic oils.
So, this is saying that depending in your driving you may or may not benefit from Synthetic. Personally, I would not dream of using anything but Mobil 1.

Re: Average oil consumption? (adykes)

ive never ran any turbo/supercharged cars on "regula" oil, always synthetic.
that said, yea I have to add a quart or less every 10000 miles or so/every other oil change.
