Volvo inline 5's sound so different with an automatic transmission than with a manual....the automatics have a loud whining sound as the revs rise, but manuals do not. has anyone else noticed this?

I know what you're saying but this is not with all the cars.
You are referring to a transmission whine, not always good depending on how loud the "whine" is

Re: Automatic vs. Manual engine sound (JRL)

JRL your right. And as well sometimes the variation in downpipes from a stick and auto, makes its presents known as well. Have not done a search but many times there are two different OEM part numbers for cars with stick and auto too. Harmonics over the rev range is one reason. And the other is HP and TQ differences for engs of the two kinds of trans. After market is not ALWAYS that way. And tends to take a one size fits all tact for $$$ reasons. Hense odd noises from odd cars at odd times.
