A couple of times, when opening the door (S60 D5, June 2002) I have found the fan working at its max.!! And impossible to turn it off. I had to start the engine and then turn the fan off. It is a dual air conditioning (not clima) and this happened at night at a very normal temperature outside and inside of the car.
Has enyone else experienced something similar?
Is it normal?

Re: "Automatic" fan (eplaya)

I have not noticed this on our S60 yet (only had it in cold weather so far), but this is normal for newer cars. Fan is helping to dump residual engine heat to prevent any damage to aluminum. Now, I am refering to engine fan near radiator - not the one that circulates air to cabin. I assume it is the engine fan you are refering to - correct?

On our V70, the fan automatically turns on 50 minutes after shutting the car off. I don't have my manual handy, but I had read in the manual that it does this to blow out condensation from the ventilation system.

Re: "Automatic" fan (jblust)

You are correct. This subject has been discussed before-- you should be able to find the thread if you do a search. If the air conditioning has been on, the fan will blow at high speed about 1 hour after you shut off the car. This removes condensation, which will reduce the musty smell that develops sometimes. I must admit it freaked me out too, the first time I opened the car door and found the fan going full speed.

Re: "Automatic" fan (Veilig)

That makes sense. In fact I had the moldy problem in a previous Volvo 940 SW.
Thanks!
