Like the BMW it is aimed primarily at road use, for even Land Rover admits that few of its owners venture into the rough stuff. Volvo has some tricks up its sleeve, too, including keen pricing that undercuts rivals and the fitment of seven seats on all models sold in the UK. That will draw buyers into the showroom, and once there we reckon they will be impressed by the style and the quality that's on offer. The XC90 is roomy and comfortable, at least as a four-seater - the other three occupants had better not be too large.
The rear seats are full sized but it's a real scramble to get there and legroom is tight unless the middle seats are slid forward. There's space for a few bags with all seven seats in place but this becomes a massive load area with the back row tucked away. The D5 turbo-diesel is a nice unit somewhat overwhelmed by a fully loaded XC90; the T6 gains a 2.9-litre 272bhp twin-turbo six which is more suited. Even this doesn't transform the XC90 into a genuine X5 rival, however, for the chassis is more biased towards comfort. Even so, it seems certain to be a massive success for Volvo.

-Drew
