I've never heard of this problem, and can't figure out how it happened - but - my V70-T5 wagon's AT stick-thingy, the one you pull out and check fluid levels with, is completely stuck inside the tube. Won't budge. My son and I have tried everything, and we're to the point of rigging up some sort of cable and pulling it out forcefully. The local dealer won't go near this problem - and frankly, I think THEY created it to begin with, as the car was serviced prior to my ownership, by a well known Maryland dealership. I definitely need to check fluid levels - my former husband used to assure me that it's better that I have a little less fluid in there than over, and he never forced the stick thingy out of the tube. BUT - now I want to have the transmission fluid removed and or flushed and think this thing should be mobile, not stuck in there. The car has 130K miles on it, I use Mobil1 oil and recommended changes, etc., so other than this issue, right now, my car has been "maintained".
Anyone ever heard of such a thing happening? I'm going out on a limb here, but is it possible that it's somehow melted to some other metal part in there?? The car shifts **not as well** as I'd like, and I'm sure it could use a fluid exchange/flush. I'm terrified of AT problems as I've owned Fords in the past, and Chyrslers that all had major AT problems, including failures, rebuilds and failures/rebuilds on the manufacturers. God knows I don't even want to think about a new AT in this car...
VolvoRottie

Re: Auto Transmission stick stuck in position (VolvoRottie)

First question...
Can you rotate, move, or get any "play" from the little yellow piece? Do you think it's possible that the plastic is simply fused in place somehow?
My first try to remedy the issue would be to wrap a piece of felt cloth that's about 1/4" thick by 2" X 2" around the top of the tube where the stick and tube meet and then wire tie it in place. From there I would soak the felt and tube with PB Blaster spray or Kano-oil (Kroil) and wait. Odds are you will get this little thing out in a few hours of soaking.
Now if you are able to move the yellow cap and it still is stuck, then I would get a pair of pliers out and go for gusto! It's what a trany shop will do as would anyone else...so save a few hours of labor and try it yourself. The damage has been done already if the stick is stuck...
If you need help and want to drive into Frederick...I'll offer my services...
Cheers,
Prospero

Jeeze, I don't know. Can you rotate the handle at all? Maybe get a little WD40 under it and rotate-pull to loosen it up.
Oops. Doubled with Prospero...
Okay, we'll try that and then....who knows.
The yellow ring rotates, but pulling on it hard makes the engine move slightly. Which doesn't sound good.
Prospero: my son routinely goes to Frederick to do some kind of extreme mountain biking with his guy friends. I'll ask him if he'd like to take the wagon out there and meet up w/ya - I'd love to meet another Volvo maniac [I happen to dream of owning one that's been mod'd out the ying yang]. He drives a 1996 Audi A4Q, and belongs to a car club up here for Audi nuts. So he knows a bit about Euro cars.
This weekend it's scheduled for an oil change, fuel filter & air filter he's doing.
Other recent developments with this car - 2 days ago we noticed it has a "tick tick tick" noise that's not good. BAH! Just read up on why [I thought immediately of a valve lifters problem] and seems my engine has this an "issue". Keeping fingers crossed it's as others have been able to fix w/Lucas, oil change, and possibly O-ring replacement vs. far more expensive work.

Just keep your oil at the 1/8" over the center-line of the dipstick to keep out of too much trouble.
I also have a killer Indy mechanic that is Volvo Only and is here in Frederick as well. I trust him with everything and he's not too expensive to boot! So if you are going to get the O-ring repaired...he may be the one to call for that.
Good luck and PM me when you have a chance.
Cheers,
Prospero

Re: Auto Transmission stick stuck in position (Prospero)

Email sent today - and thanks for all the advice, and help. I sent you all
my info and the kid's info [I say kid, but he's 27! ]
Take care and we'll talk soon.
PS: did I say that I hate transmission issues? Uh yeah, I really hate them. It always ends up costing WAY more than the budget plans for and is a big headache.
Course, the trans in this car has 135K on it and I'm not saying that it's a dog. Because I actually love my Volvo 'mom-mobile'- heh.
