Re: Auto Trans Fluid (row)

Fully sythetic. Mobil makes a sythetic that is 1/4 the price of the Volvo fluid and is the same make. Jim Lill could you please let us know what that Mobil product is?

Re: Auto Trans Fluid (JimLill)

OK, I'll mutter "touché" and defer to the two Jims on this one. Let's remember that JWS3309 is only a specification, however. Not a recommendation for the Mobil 3309 brand name. If you prefer to run fully synthetic fluids, there may be a full synthetic out there that "meets and exceeds" the JWS3309 spec. I don't know if the Mobil 1 full syn ATF does, or any other full synthetic for that matter. Research is your friend.
Re: Auto Trans Fluid (ljjones)

Can I use Amsoil ATF? JWS 3309 is listed as one of the specifications. I was going to use Mobil 1, but after finding out it's not fully synthetic, I'm back dealer ATF or Amsoil.
https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atf.aspx

Re: Auto Trans Fluid (volvoNB)

I'd be leery of using other than Volvo or Mobil unless it specifically says A-W usage like the Mobil 3309.
As an aside, I'll NEVER use Amsoil no matter how good because of overwhelming barrage of info they have on the net. They act like snake-oil, so I treat them that way.

Re: Auto Trans Fluid (ljjones)

Beaten to death.
Mobil 3309 is JWS approved and accepted as a direct replacement for Volvo fluid. Neither one is advertised to be "synthetic".
It's been verbally stated they are. But it doesn't say so on the bottles or advertisments. Mobil 3309 is heavily heavily suspected to be the Volvo fluid at 75% less than the Stealership fluid.
Call a Mobil distributor and buy the 3309

Re: Auto Trans Fluid (ljjones)

I am all for you being the trial guy for using Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. I am pretty convinced, however that certain trans oils are indeed different and have characteristics which influence shift quality and TC life.
The AW trans auto's must use JWS type 3309 fluids.
I think too many people get hung up on synthetic versus non synthetic. It really doesn't matter as long as it meets JWS 3309 specification.
And Mobil 3309 is basically non synthetic, and the "volvo" fluid is the same and it's not synthetic either. I think people assimulate the high cost the dealers are selling the fluid for for the uneducated, to be a special synthetic, when in fact it's just rebadged Mobil 3309. Why use anything else.? These AW trans' if properly maintained with fluid changes should last 300,000 miles.

Quote, originally posted by ljjones »

And I have a '99 that became perfect immediately after a flush and change to Mobil 1 syn ATF. Re: Auto Trans Fluid (fredmc)

Fred, I'm with you on this one. I don't understand all the reluctance to accept a fully qualified product from a MAJOR lubricant company, one that cleary states that it meets all the manufacturer's (as in transmission) specifications.
The base stock of the ATF is probably nothing special, but the friction modifiers must be tailored specifically (there's that word again) for the AW55. As well as having a good slug of antioxidants and stabilizers for the extended change interval.
Mobil isn't in the business of buying back blown trannies.
$4/Qt + shipping: http://store.avlube.com/mobilatf3309.html
